Mary Hallesy Will Be Presenting Her Experiences with Polar Bears on Saturday July 26th~By Maurie Hoekstra of The Calaveras County Library

Arnold, CA....Mary Hallesy, an Arnold resident, will be presenting her experiences with the polar bears of Churchill Manitoba on Saturday July 26, 2008 at the Arnold Branch Library at 1:30. The program will be repeated at the San Andreas Library on Thursday August 21, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. For more information call the Library at 754-6701. Mary says: “It seemed our large furry polar bears were faced with an uncertain future. Was this really true and if so, what was happening? Was climate change causing a decrease of the ice pack in the....

Arctic waters.? My brother Buzz and I, both retired educators, decided to go and find out. We met in Winnipeg, Manitoba the end of October 2007 and flew north many miles to the small town of Churchill near the shores of Hudson Bay. We rode in a tundra buggy and lived on a Tundra Train parked by the newly freezing water. We eagerly began our search to view this largest arctic terrestrial predator.

If you want to see pictures and find out more about this trip please do attend. You will hear tales of experiences in the town of Churchill, the Polar Bear Patrol and the Polar Rogue Bear Jail. We also found buildings from the old D.E.W. (Distant Early Warning) Line of the cold war days.

Since our trip, earlier this year the polar bear has been designated as threatened with extinction, making it the first creature added to the endangered species list primarily because of global warming. No Goldilocks, it is not yet a "Three Bears" happy ending. Maybe it could be? I hope so! “
