Independent Research Finds Fueling Costs for Electric Vehicles (EV) are Often Higher Than for Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)

East Lansing, MI...Anderson Economic Group released today the first in a series of analyses examining the transition from ICE vehicles to EVs.  This initial 36-page study is the culmination of comprehensive research comparing the “apples-to-apples” costs involved in fueling both EVs and ICE vehicles. AEG undertook this study after noting that many commonly cited figures did not account for the true costs associated with EV charging.

AEG calculated the cost of chargers, additional road taxes, commercial charging fees, and “deadhead” miles for three different EV driving scenarios and compared these with 3 analogous ICE vehicle scenarios. The research found that fueling an EV is often more expensive than fueling an ICE vehicle. It further found that fueling costs are far more variable for EVs. The authors go on to note the significant time costs imposed on EV drivers as a result of both inadequate infrastructure and wait times associated with fueling, which can be five to ten times the cost for ICE drivers.

According to study author Patrick Anderson, “These numbers may be surprising to those who haven’t relied upon an electric vehicle, but it’s important we safeguard the public from ‘charger shock.’ Before consumers can feel comfortable buying EVs in large numbers, they need to understand the true costs involved.”

Future studies in the EV transition series (available by subscription only) will draw from ongoing research published to the Automotive Dashboard (andersoneconomicgroup.com/automotive-dashboard). This publicly available resource offers a rolling data overview that tracks metrics critical to the auto industry.

Can’t build an electric vehicle without oil. Plastic parts come from oil bi products. And the batteries are built by mining the earth with diesel powered equipment.

I don't think anyone buys a $100k Tesla because it's 'cheaper at the pump'. We buy Teslas because of their performance, environmental impact and the sheer joy of them.

If I wanted a cheap to own car I would have bought a Corolla.

Also true of ICE Cars. Perhaps a bit less lithium, but not material in the total bill of materials.

Sometimes and at this point in time. But we can no longer afford to further destroy our planet. It will take time to build the infrastructure though it's past time to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels - and stop paying Republican run states like Texas and Alaska for their monopolies. Do you know that every man, woman and child gets a government stipend from the oil companies annually? Locals chuckle and call it "hush money."

And they are having trouble disposing of the batteries in the gas cars. Where do you think the big ones from the electric cars are going when they die? And the pumps are not run on electricity.

How are we going to generate enough electricity to power our homes, cars, businesses, etc.? And solar systems have backup batteries too. Where do we dispose of them when they die?

And in the long-term, nothing will be cheaper.

And why is it the US has to make all the changes to save the world. We are not the major contributors to the eco system changes.

All we are doing is trading one energy source with issues for another power source with issues that are equal to or worse than what we already have.

I feel like that's opinion. Not fact. Worse that destroying the ozone layer? That's a pretty bold statement

Not opinion but fact. Destroy the ozone or the land and ocean. That's you choices.

Let's save the ozone while we fill our land and water with toxic waste. I go for saving our land and water.

Our gov. is already trying to figure out where to dispose of electronic car batteries, failed solar panels, etc.

We can control what we do to our land and water. We cannot control the ozone, which is shared by the world. The US has done their part to save the ozone. The other countries have not. Go after them.

Build me that new car with batteries and a wooden frame and seats. OH Wait !! We can’t use wood because the spotted owl won’t have anything to live in. Besides that we need the forest so Cal Fire can have something to do. I guess we should just walk to the food bank and the river for water. The world revolves around oil and it will live forever.

I hope Gavin and company takes over PG&E then charging our new cars will triple in price. I can see it now, 60 cars lined up at a time trying to get charged, cars dead on the road blocking traffic, pissed off people shooting one another trying to get a charge ahead of someone else. Liberals are like that, pointing their fingers at others and pulling the trigger.

He also took us out of the Iran nuclear deal, made peace in the middle east, gave us a secure border, kept China in check, kept inflation to nothing, had American manufacturing up 30%, had USA energy independent, had the police and the military s back, had our Allies back, had our Allies paying their fair share for NATO, dropped out of WHO for excellent reasons and we payed ten times of the amount China did, the creator of covid? Trump did a lot of great things, and Biden has done a lot of absolutely fantastic things, for our adversaries, for our enemies, and has put the United States of America LAST.

When you lead off with the Iran deal and backing out, your argument lost all credibility.
For inspections in Iran we needed the deal.
          Support from our allies? Ha
Energy? Trump told OPEC they needed to raise their prices. They listened.
Cops and military think Trump's an idiot.
