Governor Newsom Visits UC Merced, Highlights Equity Efforts of Future Medical School

Merced, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom today visited the future site of UC Merced’s Medical Education Building, joined by Congressmember Jim Costa, Senator Anna Caballero, Assemblymember Adam Gray and university leaders. Governor Newsom discussed the significance of the future school for the region and its potential benefit to health outcomes in the long-underserved area of the state.

Governor Newsom visits UC Merced campus.

“The Central Valley community has been living with unfair health outcomes for too long,” said Governor Newsom. “Zip codes shouldn’t be a pre-existing condition. UC Merced’s Medical School will be the first of its kind for the community, providing local students with opportunities to both learn closer to home and serve the communities they grew up in, while also working to confront the most persistent health challenges facing the Central Valley head-on.”

“Establishing a medical school at UC Merced has been a dream for more than 20 years. Today that dream becomes a reality as we establish a branch campus of the best medical school in the country right here in the San Joaquin Valley. The medical school will truly transform the health care landscape in one of the most underserved regions of California. This is by far my proudest accomplishment. I am extremely grateful to Governor Newsom for making Valley health care a priority,” said Assemblymember Gray.

The Central Valley experiences some of the worst health outcomes in the state, while having fewer doctors in the community than other regions. There are 157 medical doctors for every 100,000 residents in the Central Valley, compared with 411 per 100,000 in the Bay Area. Statewide there’s 157 primary care physicians per 100,000 residents, while in the Central Valley there’s less than 45 per 100,000.

The Medical Education Program is a joint effort between UC Merced, UC San Francisco and UC San Francisco-Fresno. UC Merced’s proposed Health, Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education Building will be home to the Medical Education Program, Health Sciences Research Institute, and the Departments of Psychological Sciences and Public Health, serving approximately 2,220 undergraduates by 2030. The Program will also have capacity to train 200 medical school students, with the first cohort of 50 on track for enrollment in 2023. Governor Newsom’s 2020 State Budget included $15 million in ongoing funding to support the operation of the joint medical education program and Governor Newsom’s 2019 State Budget reflected a commitment to fiscally support the University of California’s issuance of bonds to pursue UC Merced’s medical school project.

Before you recall...

Before the recall comments come in I have a few questions.
If you want a recall, next time have a viable candidate.
Where was your candidate? What did he stand for beyond the shallow talking points? Did your candidate have a position paper that was well thought out? Elders position on certain items was lacking. looked like a 15 year old wrote some of the stuff on his website.
Before you jump, next time have a plan.
Ps I voted NO on the recall because there was no real adult to take over.

Same problem we have with the next Presidential election. Who are we going to run? The last guy who lost the white house, the senate, and the house? No Thanks. Our bench is too thin or full of certifiable whack jobs like MTG and Goetz. The Dems will run the table if we don't find someone sane.

Hope you are proud of yourself because I really feel sorry for you. The bottom has fallen out and the big ship I’d sinking! Thank you democrats. LET’S GO BRANDEN

I used to feel sorry for poorly educated republicans like you.

I don't anymore. You've had the opportunity to educate yourself. And you chose not to. Pay the price.

You pick on the right but your world is disintegrating as well. How is anything but maybe twitter better right now?

The left runs the world like they think its a term paper. Its not your idiocy is destroying real lives along with yours while you cheer.

That is real insanity!! You hated Trump so much you are willing to destroy your world to get rid of him.

Newsom is a fine governor. It's only the extreme right that will never accept him. The rest of the state loves him. As we saw in Sept.

It is scary that you liberals can't get enough of Newsome and Biden. Newsome is only in Merced to bait the Latino vote and Biden is only breathing because someone told him to.

I'm a student of medical college, and here I'm looking for answers to many of my questions. It's great to read about the experience and opinions of people who understand this. Now I'm writing a lit review about a book on artificial blood circulation, I had a lot of difficulties with this. I'm using professional help, and it helps me a lot. Thanks to this, I understand this topic better, and I'll finish my work very soon.
