Violinist Kim Angelis Featured at Music in the Parks in San Andreas This Wednesday!
San Andreas, CA...Make sure you plan to go to the free “Music in the Parks” concert in Turner Park, San Andreas, on July 16, and take a musical adventure guided by Kim Angelis, a violin virtuoso and composer whose music is described as “fiery and Gypsy-inspired.” The free concert, produced by the Calaveras County Arts Council, starts at 6:30 pm from the gazebo in the cool, tree-shaded park that is located a half block off Highway 49 on Treat Avenue.....
Accompanied by her husband and soul-mate Josef Gault on guitar, Angelis will blaze a melodic trail through classical, world, and multi-cultural territories. Angelis has been interested in Gypsy music since she was a child in San Francisco. The great-granddaughter of a British Gypsy, she grew up listening to the music in her mother’s eclectic record collection and playing the violin from the age of ten. She majored in music at the University of California, Irvine, where she studied with the best violinists in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She won every available scholarship, was featured soloist with the UCI Symphony, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Now, her performances are punctuated with dancing and passionate energy, hence the “Gypsy” description.
Flamenco-inspired Josef “The Wild Hungarian” Gault will accompany Angelis on guitar, playing in the fiery tradition of Manitas de Plata and Sabicas.
Angelis and Gault appear before adoring fans in such far flung places as Taiwan, Chile, and Alaska, besides going on tours throughout California and the Pacific northwest. During the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, NBC gave their music prime-time coverage. Also, PBS and NPR have aired their music. The independent film “Sweet Nothings” exclusively features music by Kim Angelis, and it was nominated for Best Score by the International Independent Film Tour. Before moving to Astoria, Oregon, Kim and Josef were longtime Calaveras residents, generating musical excitement on many local stages and in local schools.
Bring your lowback chairs and picnics to Turner Park. Parking is at the adjacent church, Wells Fargo Bank or Treat’s. Next week, on July 23, “Music in the Parks” moves to Murphys Community Park. Visit www.calaverasarts.org or call (209)754-1774 for more information.
