Calaveras County Board of Supervisor Meeting Public Comments Video for July 8, 2008

San Andreas, CA...Enclosed is well over an hour of the public comment period at today's board meeting. It was an intense, rough and bumpy ride. If you are looking for the cliff notes version this is it. CAO Lawton stated at the beginning of the meeting that there will be a closed session next week to discuss personnel issues including discipline or termination. The public comment period included many sharp exchanges as was expected. It also had a few "Only in Calaveras" lighthearted moments specifically around poultry. The Board now faces a unified cross section of the business community that would like changes to be made at the CDA. Supervisor Callaway also called for people to be patient while the process takes it course.....

On a personal note it was in many ways a very sad day. We doubt that Supervisor Tryon really wanted to make his Grand Jury complaint public. He probably felt compelled to do so in light of recent events. It was also a meeting that I doubt the majority of the board members relished in anyway. Supervisor Claudino was deeply affected as would all of us in a similar situation. No one really knows where this will all end. Everything is in play right now. Will the CDA Director be able to retain her position? Legally maybe, but politically it looks doubtful.

How will all of this affect upcoming Elections? No one really knows. Supervisor Thomas will no doubt be under intense pressure before next weeks closed session. Supervisor Wilensky is thought by many to be in a good spot with his recent large margin of victory. Supervisor Claudino will be retiring in a few months so his motivations will probably be on a personal level. How will this affect Supervisor Tom Tryon? Initial indications are that it will have a positive effect. It is however, still a long 4 months to November.

Due to the significant interest in this mornings meeting we streamed as much of it as we could. We have a very weak network connection in the Board Chambers we had to restart the feed several times. The raw video from a small hand-held camera is below and we will provide you a higher quality copy of the official video later. With length of the entire meeting the full video will probably not be on the server before tomorrow night.

The raw video is below. Remember you can always skip to the portion of the meeting you would like to see
