Governor Newsom Signs Historic Broadband Legislation to Help Bridge Digital Divide

Traver, CA...At a rural elementary school in Tulare County, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed legislation to advance the state’s commitment to bridging the digital divide by increasing equitable, affordable access to high-speed internet service across California. Through a $6 billion multi-year investment, more Californians will be able to access broadband coverage with the construction of a state-owned open access middle mile network and last mile projects that connect unserved households and businesses with local networks.

Governor Newsom signs $6 billion broadband legislation.

“As we work to build California back stronger than before, the state is committed to addressing the challenges laid bare by the pandemic, including the digital divide holding back too many communities in a state renowned for its pioneering technology and innovation economy,” said Governor Newsom. “This $6 billion investment will make broadband more accessible than ever before, expanding opportunity across the spectrum for students, families and businesses – from enhanced educational supports to job opportunities to health care and other essential services. I thank the Legislature for its partnership on this critically important step to ensuring that California’s economic recovery will leave no part of our state behind.”

Governor Newsom signed SB 156 at Traver Joint Elementary, a school serving diverse students in a rural Tulare County community. The school has distributed hotspot devices to students for internet access as part of the state’s cross-sector efforts launched during the pandemic.

Governor Newsom signs $6 billion broadband legislation.

The historic legislation, announced last week in partnership with legislative leaders, advances the statewide broadband plan with expanded infrastructure prioritizing unserved and underserved areas. The legislation includes:

  • $3.25 billion to build, operate and maintain an open access, state-owned middle mile network – high-capacity fiber lines that carry large amounts of data at higher speeds over longer distances between local networks.
  • $2 billion to set up last-mile broadband connections that will connect homes and businesses with local networks. The legislation expedites project deployment and enables Tribes and local governments to access this funding.
  • $750 million for a loan loss reserve fund to bolster the ability of local governments and nonprofits to secure financing for broadband infrastructure.
  • Creation of a broadband czar position at the California Department of Technology, and a broadband advisory committee with representatives from across state government and members appointed by the Legislature.

Last year, the state mobilized companies, business leaders and philanthropists through public-private partnerships to facilitate distance learning at school districts in need across the state. The effort helped connect students lacking high-speed internet or an appropriate computing device at home with donated mobile hotspots, laptops, Chromebooks, tablets and other devices. The legislation signed today takes a comprehensive and long-term approach to tackling the broadband infrastructure deficiencies still impacting rural and low-income communities, bringing the state closer to achieving affordable, high-speed broadband internet service for all communities.

No, that is bullsh*t. Governor Newsom is a disaster and has caused Californians thousands of jobs and many have left the state due to his mismanagement. Read some these posts that supports his incompetence. You Democraps are all alike by talking sh*t with no facts to back it up.

I'm a republican. And I fundamentally disagree. Those of you who are thinking that someone is going to come in and manage this state better than Newsome are about as smart as Ted Cruz. And you're the reason why we lost the last election.

    Governor Gavin Newsom Failed Californians
Unaffordable housing. Record homelessness. Rising crime. Failing schools. Independent contractors thrown out of work. Exploding pension debt. And now, a locked down population while the prisons are emptied. Hold Gavin Newsom accountable. Gavin Newsom must go.
VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom and here is why: Gavin Newsom’s policies are bad for California, bad for business, and he is soft on crime. Since taking office the problems facing us have grown and his policies have only made them worse. Everywhere you look, Gavin Newsom’s failures of are obvious. For the first time in history California population declined businesses closed, corporations left and a congressional seat was lost as a result. REBUILD the California, VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom.

Governor Newsom is soft on crime. He signed SB 145 referred to as the “Pedophile Bill” into law. His mass release of prisoners have led to a spike in crime, increased homelessness and the deterioration of our great state. Californians pay the highest cost of living, the highest taxes of any state. Yet crime is soaring, electricity is unreliable, our roads are crumbling, our water supply is insufficient, water is rationed, and the mismanaged forests are burning. To make things worse he released many of the CDC fire crews, cut their budget and closed CDC fire camps. NOW he is closing Susanville State Prison, where fire crews were housed, eliminating a valuable resource and crippling the local economy. Gavin Newsom misled the people and lied about forest land cleared for fire prevention as California enters a dangerous fire season.

VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom.

Under Gavin Newsom our public schools have failed, California was ranked 37th, K – 12 nationwide and our kids have lost a year plus of vital learning. He removed the teacher’s authority to maintain discipline in the classroom and imposed the controversial sexual education curriculum.

VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom.

During 2021 Newsom’s Employment Development Department paid est. $31 billion tax dollars in fraudulent claims! He misused our gas tax money for purposes not intended and held those funds hostage to force state housing requirements on local municipalities. He now seeks to take local zoning away from cities and impose state mandates upon them through AB 9 and 10.

He kept people from attending church, closed schools, supported open borders and the mass release of criminals while he closed our state and shut down the economy. Newsom is bad for California.

VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom

We saw an increase of 6.8% in homelessness between 2019 and 2020, the largest increase of any state in that time frame. California has the highest level of functional poverty in the U.S., Slightly more than 36 percent of California’s residents are at or near the poverty level, more than one third of its population. Gavin Newsom and the elite are getting richer while the average Californian is getting poorer. We cannot afford another 17 months of Gavin Newsom.

This is a groundswell movement (Of THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE!). Citizens from all walks of life, the entire political spectrum, every ethnicity, culture and race support this recall.

VOTE YES to RECALL Gavin Newsom.
