On Saturday, July 19, the daylong series of activities will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a 90-minute concert by the Calaveras Community Band, under the direction of Mic Harper. Hamburgers, hot dogs, wine, beer, and other beverages will be for sale with the proceeds again going to maintain the park. A Nostalgia Luncheon will be provided free of charge to anyone who has attained the age of 70 and has lived in the Murphys, Douglas Flat, Vallecito area for at least ten years. This traditional event, once called the Old-timers Luncheon, is made possible by a generous contribution from the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Anyone meeting the criteria who would like to be included should call 728-8392 by July 14 to make a reservation.
Throughout the afternoon there will be activities to entertain young and old.
Starting at 1 p.m., the Murphys Volunteer Library will conduct its very popular duck races. There will be three races for youngsters and two for adults. Purchasers of the yellow ducks will cheer them on as they make their way down the scenic Murphys Creek. The winning entries will secure for their owners attractive prizes provided by local merchants. Proceeds will go to support the library. For further information contact the library at 728-3036.
Since January, the Murphys Community Club has been selling raffle tickets to raise funds to purchase and install shade sails over the equipment in the park’s children’s play area. There have been 100 tickets offered at $100 each, the prize being a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, including a seven-day stay in a luxurious vacation home in a prestigious gated community. The drawing for the lucky winner will be held during Homecoming at 2 p.m. For information about purchasing raffle tickets, or about Homecoming in general, call 728-2788.
