TAXPAYERS: Free The Old Corner!~From Al Segalla
Copperopolis, CA...The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association (CCTA) urges the county to grandfather the Old Corner Saloon, according to Al Segalla, President. In a letter to Stephanie Moreno, Director of the Calaveras County Community Development Agency Segalla said, “We have received a request for help from our member, Bud "Odie" Odekirk, owner of the Old Corner Saloon in Copperopolis....
The county is asking him to apply for a zoning change, estimated to cost about $3,000, to Commercial classification before he can use his front porch for food and beverage.
The renovated Old Corner Saloon has been in commercial use for a hundred and forty six years and is the oldest business in Copperopolis.
The owner has already spent several thousand dollars on the railing, tables and chairs for the front deck, and every day of delay hurts his business.
Odie received complete approval from ABC and a license that reflected the areas where it was legal to drink. Believing he had approval from the ABC, he constructed a requested safety railing along the deck.
However, the ABC will not approve his use of the new deck until the county also approves, and the county won't approve unless the zoning is changed. Based on the information known so far, this seems to be very unfair to the owner.
Please look into this issue to see how it can be quickly resolved administratively.
We are also interested in possible reform to the zoning code, regarding pre-existing uses, which could preclude this problem from happening again.”
Supervisor Russ Thomas who was copied on the letter replied; “I agree with you....there should be an easy fix for this. We shouldn’t be creating hurdles for businesses; we should be making it easier.”
