Lloyd Dean Takes Helm of Chairperson of Catholic Health Association
Lloyd Dean was installed as chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the national Catholic Health Association amid praise for his record of promoting healthcare reform and pledges of support from political leaders to help achieve a reformed system. Dean, the president and chief executive officer of Catholic Healthcare West, was installed at CHA’s annual convention held in San Diego June 22-24. Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a member of Catholic Healthcare West, the eighth largest hospital system in the nation. At the......
meeting, Dean spoke of the need to advocate for the 47 million uninsured in America who should have access to quality, compassionate care.
“For too long, the measure of healthcare reform has been its cost, its fiscal impact,” said Dean. “But healthcare has at its heart the instinct for compassion. Through our efforts in the coming year, we can advance the importance of compassion in the healthcare debate, to see whatever system is created has those values at the center.”
Dean was lauded by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who spoke at the meeting about Dean’s efforts on behalf of the state’s healthcare reform legislation. He praised Dean’s support in assembling an “unprecedented and historic coalition” for healthcare reform in California. “Let me tell you, with CHW and with Lloyd Dean right there at the front, everyone stood tall and strong….resolute in their commitment to the cause,” Schwarzenegger told the more than 1,200 conference attendees. “We will not rest until the job is finished, and I know that Lloyd will not rest either and he will be by my side every step of the way.”
As chairperson, Dean will serve as a key liaison to elected officials, policy makers and healthcare experts in advocating for improved access to healthcare. “We’re pleased to welcome Lloyd in his new role as chairperson,” said Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, CHA president and chief executive officer. “His years of leadership and commitment to the Catholic health ministry, both in California and nationally, contribute greatly to advancing the work of the association and its members, including our goal of expanding access to quality healthcare for everyone.”
Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a not-for-profit, 48-bed general acute care hospital serving all of Calaveras County.
