Health Precautions Advised for Smoke in Air

San Andreas, CA...Smoke from the fires burning in Northern California is affecting parts of Calaveras County. This is resulting in poor air quality that can be harmful to residents, especially persons who are more sensitive to the effects of smoke. The Calaveras County Public Health Department and Air Pollution Control District are advising residents to take precautions to prevent exposure to wildfire smoke. All persons who can see or smell smoke, should avoid outdoor activities...
..

Some people are more sensitive to the effects of smoke. This includes:

People with asthma and other respiratory diseases
People with heart disease and high blood pressure
Elderly people
Children
Pregnant women
People who smoke

Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer, advises sensitive persons to take the following actions:

Stay indoors or limit time outdoors
Keep house windows and doors closed
Set air conditioners to re-circulate air if possible
Limit physical activity and exertion
Keep car windows closed; set air conditioning to re-circulate air
Follow your asthma management plan
Reduce indoor air pollutants
Tobacco smoke
Vacuuming
Using paints, solvents

People with heart or lung disease who experience repeated coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain should contact their doctor or clinic. “If an existing illness gets worse due to smoke exposure, get medical assistance,” Dr. Kelaita emphasized.

Fires and smoke may recur this summer. These precautions should be followed whenever smoke can be seen or smelled. A fact sheet on Wildfire Smoke Precautions is available on the Public Health Department page at www.co.calaveras.ca.us.
