Registered Nurse Commended for Saving efforts on Airplane~By Larry Cornish
San Andreas, CA....At a special ceremony on June 18, 2008, David Lei, a Registered Nurse at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit was recognized for his part in saving the life of a passenger on Southwest flight 3775 on June 10, 2008. Mr. Lei, who has extensive certification and experience in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, went into action when a “CODE BLUE” was called from the back of the airplane on its way to Burbank. With the help of other clinical persons on board, they were able to stabilize the passenger until the plane made an emergency landing and the passenger was transported to a nearby hospital....

“I felt like I was just doing my job” said Mr. Lei. “The only things that were different were trying to provide the care in a very cramped location and the absence of resources, such as monitors and airways. There was a defibrillator available, thankfully we didn’t have to use it”.
Joining in the ceremony held at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital were David’s wife Julie, also a Registered Nurse, son Shawn and daughter Nicole. With many of his fellow workers in attendance, David was presented with a commemorative plaque and a gift certificate. “We are so proud of David” said Kassie Waters, manager of the Intensive Care Unit. “He has been with MTSJH since 1989, and is a highly skilled and trained professional. He’s a wonderful employee and person”.
