Swimmers Take Your Mark! Get Set! Go! ~By Hanna Alldrin

Murphys, CA...."Mainly, I like to have fun. Swimming is all about having fun, and I am firm believer that you should keep swimming as long as you are having fun, but I can say that it becomes much more fun as you get older and learn more about the sport, life, and especially more about yourself." ~Scott Goldblatt (National Champion) The Murphy’s Dolphins are putting on the suits for the 2008 swim season. The children were off to a chilly start this morning, as they dipped into the pool at 9am......

The team is open to all children 5-18 years of age that live along the Highway 4 corridor from Copperopolis to Bear Valley. There are five seperate divisions including: 6 and under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-18. There is one requirement for all swimmers, they must be able to swim to one end of the pool and back with no assistance from coaches or lifeguards.

Murphys Dolphins is a co-ed summer recreational program for kids looking to improve their swimming abilities, participate in team competition and have fun. "This year we have over 60 swimmers," shared Karla St'Lewis.

The two head coaches of the Murphys Dolphins are Mark St'Lewis and Karla St'Lewis. Karla has been coaching the Murphys Dolphins for 10 years and has been coaching swimming for over 18. This is Marks 5th year coaching the Dolphins. "I get a joy out of coaching swimmers, I myself was a Dolphin swimmer many years ago," shared Mark.

"My expectation for the swimmers this year are to help them become more experience swimmers," shared Karla. Some of the swimmers are inexperienced but they have no fear with lifeguard Rachel Hecocks watching their every stroke. Rachel has been life guarding the Dolphins for the past two years, and was also a Dolphin swimmer for many years.

The season runs about five weeks, with practices starting 9am Tuesday through Friday, with meats on Saturday. The Dolphins compete throughout the season with Ion and Valley Springs. Good Luck Dolphins
