Shermie is Your Calaveras Pet of the Week!

San Andreas, CA... Meet Shermie, a spunky terrier mix estimated to be about ten years old. A confident and affectionate dog, Shermie bonds easily with staff and volunteers. He very much enjoys being petted and handled, has nice leash manners and will sit patiently for treats. Though older, Shermie still has a lot of giddy up in his go and would make a wonderful walking companion. Shermie playfully interacted with other shelter dogs; still, a “meet and great” will be required if you have another dog at home. He is also quiet in his kennel and may be housebroken since he keeps his area clean.

As with all dogs available for adoption at the Calaveras Animal Shelter, Shermie is micro-chipped and up-to-date on routine vaccinations. He will need to be neutered before going home with you. Shermie is also eligible for the 55/5 reduced fee adoption program described below.

Come visit Shermie, impound no. AO51784, along with other dogs and cats awaiting their forever homes at Calaveras County Animal Services, 901 Jeff Tuttle Drive, San Andreas (in government center by the new jail). Animal Services is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday (closed for lunch from 1-2 p.m.). For more information about this dog, please email or, or call Animal Services directly at 754-6509. Please refer to Shermie’s impound number when making inquiries. Adoptable animals may also be viewed on the web at and on the Calaveras County Animal Services Facebook page.

Volunteers are very much needed as well. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, we would value your help caring for shelter animals or supporting the office. No experience necessary; we will provide training and match you to your interests. Please call 754-6509 for more information.

Animal Services now has a Fee Flexibility Program!

When the dog or cat population at the shelter is at 80% or above capacity, the total adoption fee will be 50% off––reduced to $40 for dogs and $30 for cats. The adoption fee for cats who arrive at the shelter already altered will be $10. With the 55-5-5 Program, any time an adopter is 55 or older and adopts any pet over 5 years old, the adoption fee is $5.

I'm getting to the age of not wanting a puppy anymore, and rescuing a dog would be very humane. But I'm not a lap dog person.
Hope the little guy finds a forever home.
Who's Gizmo?

A character from that silly Gremlins movie all those years ago. Agree with you, a ten-year old dog is a great choice for middle age or older. We don't want to outlive our pets and have them perhaps end up in a shelter when no one else can take.

Time and time again at the vet office I see elderly people with a puppy. Most likely they will die and the animal will be thrown in the pound by the relatives. I find it very heartless and selfish to do that to a pet.
