The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism: What the Chamber Really Thinks....An Open Letter From the Chamber Board
"In recent weeks, a tempest in a teapot has boiled up in our community. The allegation being made is that the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce believes that tourism is bad business for the County economy. For the record, let us state unequivocally: The Chamber of Commerce supports and appreciates tourism, tourist based businesses and organizations promoting tourism in all forms including agri-tourism and the wine industry all its forms in the county....
Our view, as Directors and members of the Chamber, and as business owners and residents in the county, is that the Calaveras County economy will thrive with increased economic diversity. An economy based on only a few sectors, be they tourism, construction, retail, or what have you, is not as strong as an economy with better diversification.
Too often in the past, factionalism and turf wars have divided and conquered what could have been dynamic alliances and ideas in our county. Many business and trade groups exist here, and while these may differ in their specific focus, all share one common goal: to improve the business climate in our area. The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce is committed to this goal in a broad based approach and has made great strides this year to this end. The Chamber, working with other organizations, has seen to an Economic Development component being added to the county General Plan; the Chamber is spear heading a county wide Economic Development Summit to be held in July, and a host of other positive developments.
We look forward to working together with county business interests as a whole in these exciting times. Let’s not let the progress which has been made be stifled by rumor and misunderstanding. Working together, we as business leaders in Calaveras County will thrive and leave behind a better economic climate for our children in the future."
