Creek Fire Grows to 78,790 Acres. Rate of Growth Slows, Burning Through Shaver Lake Area

Shaver Lake, CA...The latest official map is from the 5th so we have included the latest thermal imaging that can be inaccurate but in fast moving fires it is better than official mapping.  According to the imaging the heat of the fire looks to be encircling the Shaver Lake area.   If past fire behavior of fires such as the RIM and Butte Fires in our area are any indication the fire tends to want to move south and will make runs in a southward direction more than a northerly path.  This one seems to be following that pattern.  It is moving north but at a much slower rate now than initially.  The southward runs have been rapid and continuous.  The latest official info is below...

On Friday September 4, 2020 at about 6:44 PM the Fire started. This fire is burning in the Big Creek drainage between Shaver Lake, Big Creek and Huntington Lake, cause of this fire is under investigation. The Creek Fire a fast-moving fire burning on both Districts of the Forest. The fire which started near the communities of Big Creek and Huntington Lake, moved very quickly prompting several evacuations. Early Saturday afternoon the fire crossed the San Joaquin River and made a run into the Mammoth Pool area.

Closures: Hwy 168 closed at Huntington Lake Road and at the top of the four lane Cressman's. These are hard closures CHP road block in place.

Mandatory Evacuations in place for the communities of Big Creek, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake and Cascadel Woods.

Evacuation warnings now in effect from Cressman Road - Auberry Road from the top of the four lanes to Powerhouse to the San Joaquin River. Also included are Jose Basin, Alder Spring, Mono Wind Casino, Meadow Lakes and Mile High.

An evacuation warning means there is a potential threat to life and / or property. Those who require additional time to evacuate and those with pets / livestock should leave now.

For the safety of fire crews, and the public who are leaving the area weekend visitors are asked to make alternate plans. Shaver Lake is closed.

More information will be provided when obtained as this is an active initial attack and resources are committed to a full suppression engagement of the Creek Fire.

I wish the US Forestry would fight these more aggressively like Cal Fire does - with much more retardant. We don't have the luxury of doing otherwise.
