Darth Vader Rides, Walks and Almost Crawls the New Angels Camp Bypass~By John Hamilton

Angels Camp, CA...This last Memorial Day Monday I thought it would be a good idea to do another Angels Camp Bypass Update. Every few weeks we have tried to give you an idea of how things are progressing. According to Cal Trans's Chantel Miller, the Bulk of the excavating portion should be finished up in a week or so. As this portion winds down it should also alleviate some of the delays many of you have experienced. We have also heard from a few of you that the delays have been enjoyable as it gave you an opportunity to experience firsthand the impressive display of man and machine that has been making quick work of the Bypass route...

Watching the huge lumbering machines work in an almost choreographed manner is something you don't get to experience that often. We have had heard from a couple of people that the crew on this job is the "Cream of the Crop" in their technical abilities. They have made moving vast amounts of material look like child's play.

Now here is where the Darth Vader part comes in. We thought what better way to get an up close look at the project but by actually following the path of the bypass by bike with video camera in hand.... Little did I know that parts of it are harder to climb than they appear. So I got off my bike and started walking, then climbing, and eventually crawling.

About Two minutes into the 16 minutes of video you will hear some unfortunate guy off camera gasping and wheezing enough to make Darth Vader sound like the picture of health. Some of the video is shaky as I was trying to ride, walk or crawl my way along the bypass. We learned couple of things on this brief adventure. One...The construction company that is doing the bypass is working fast and furiously. Two...It is long past time for me to get back in shape.

The Video is below and links to additional photos are above.

If you are on a Mac or having issues with the above video!
