Fields Training Burn Scheduled for May 26th
San Andreas, CA...The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will be conducting a training burn north of Orange Blossom Recreation Area, approximately 4 miles northeast of the community of Oakdale. This burn is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., Monday, May 26th and end Tuesday afternoon May 27th, 2008. Approximately 150 acres of grass will be burned during the exercise......
This project has 2 objectives: (1) To improve the fire fighting capabilities of fire suppression personnel by allowing them to practice numerous advanced fire fighting techniques; and, (2) To use prescribed fire to attempt control of medusahead grass, a noxious and invasive plant. Controlling this weed will result in increased biodiversity and should promote the development of more natural levels of endemic plants.
To conduct the burn, CAL FIRE will utilize 3 engines, 1 Fire Crew, and one helicopter as well as additional engines and personnel from local fire districts including Stanislaus Consolidated and Oakdale Rural.
After the burning operation is complete, firefighters will remain on scene for patrol and mop-up until the fire is completely out. Local CAL FIRE Unit Chief, Mike Noonan, states that as long as the temperatures, humidity and winds are favorable, the burn will proceed as scheduled.
