Avery Middle School Band Receives Silver Rating at Forum Music Festival
Avery, CA...The Avery Middle School Band made its debut on their band tour last Friday. The band director, Miss Patty Jo Struve, was very proud of her students as they received a silver rating from the judges at the Forum Music Festival. The performance was held at Ohlone College in Fremont. Judges told the students that they were in the top 20 percentile for bands across the United States. Music selections were carefully chosen by the director to both....
challenge the students and let them have some fun with the music. The first selection, ³The Tempest² seemed to be the favorite by students and judges. Miss Struve prefers the selection ³The Capriol Suite² as it taught many new aspects of musicality and was the most challenging for them. Kevin Maurer, 7th grade trumpet player received high honors and a plaque for his outstanding musicianship in the concert. This group consists of 21 7th & 8th grade dedicated band students from Avery Middle School. They are very committed and have stayed in band the whole year!! This was the first time out on ³tour² or the group and the chaperones were fabulous. Here is what one chaperone had to say about the trip ³ I just want to say how proud I am to be part of the Avery Middle School music program. It's a fantastic group of kids, parents and a very enthusiastic teacher. We will all grow and learn together.² The students were rewarded after the performance with a bowling challenge and an evenings¹ stay at Hilton Concord, where swimming in an outdoor pool with sub-normal temperatures appeared to be fun?!? The next day they all went to Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo for a great time on the roller coasters and seeing animal shows. All in all, the trip was a success and we are looking forward to next year!
The students raised money for the trip through several fund raisers during the year. The first was a snowshoe event at Bear Valley, several car washes, and ended with a great Jazz Festival. They would like to thank their parents and many local businesses who made it possible to take this educational trip. It is always nice to get these kids out of the area and represent their community in a positive way.
