80 Years of Tradition~By Carolee White
Angels Camp, CA....Come join the Angels Camp Boosters as they celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Frog Jump that they started in 1928 and turned into a world-renowned event. The Boosters founded the Frog Jump to celebrate the paving of Main Street in 1928 and have officiated it every year since. In the early years the Boosters had several old-time activities in conjunction with the jump and the event grew bigger and better each year. Eventually the Frog Jump merged with the county fair. Even with the merge, the Boosters continued to officiate the Frog Jump. Now that the fair board has chosen to part ways with the Boosters, the club continues their tradition, once again on their own.....
The Original Frog Jump Jubilee will be held this weekend – Sat. May 17 & Sun. May 18 from 10:00 to 3:00 each day in Utica Park. The Finals Jump will begin at 4:00 on Sunday. The entry fees to jump a frog are very reasonable –
Children (5 & under) FREE
Youth (6 - 12) $1
Teens (13 - 19) $3
Seniors (55 & up) $3
Adults (20 - 54) $5
The top three jumps in each of the 5 categories qualify to participate in the Finals Jump on Sunday.
Prizes will be awarded to all of these qualifiers, and the top three winners of the finals will be rewarded an additional prize. The grand prize award is $500.
Frog Jockeys (the people jumping a frog) can either bring their own frog or use one supplied by the Boosters.
Refreshments will be available for sale from the Murphys Lions Club.
The Angels Camp Boosters is a community-based organization whose purpose is to preserve the history, culture and resources of Calaveras County and to promote historical celebrations and other events, which benefit the county. The Original Frog Jump Jubilee is their main event, but not their only focus.
Come down and enjoy an afternoon in the park while making history and taking part of a county tradition by jumping a frog at the 80th Frog Jump put on by the Angels Camp Boosters.
