Local Student Attendance Gets a Voice at the State Level as Christy Miro Joins State Board

Angels Camp, CA...Local resident and current Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) member, Christy Miro, has been appointed to serve on the California State Student Attendance Review Board. Miro has been a member of the Calaveras County SARB for the past six years.

SARB is a community-based effort to bring together resources for families that struggle with attendance, truancy and behavior issues. The SARB members consist of representatives from school parents, the school district, county probation, county welfare, health & human services, law enforcement, child welfare, county health care, county mental health, district attorney’s office and the County Superintendent of Schools. Resources and support are provided as an intervention for students and their families.

Miro talks about the value of her experience with SARB, “I find the amount of resources available to families, all in one room, is invaluable. Parents/Guardians have access to get immediate answers and the help they need. I really hope families view me as an advocate for them, I respect each agency represented at SARB and I truly want to help families who need it.”

The decision to pursue the State SARB stemmed from a desire “to offer a unique perspective as a parent from a rural community.” Miro adds, “we face many different struggles than larger communities, I hope to learn about legislation development and ultimately help mitigate chronic absenteeism and truancy.”

District Attorney Barbara Yook states that “the parent representative serves a very important role on SARB by ensuring the formal agencies consider the critical perspective of a parent in determining how to assist each student and family we see. All of the participating agencies are dedicated to helping the students and families make school a priority.”

Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools Scott Nanik believes that “getting involved at the state level shows our dedication to our students succeeding in school and our goal to help families eliminate barriers to school attendance.”

Miro intends to continue serving as a member of the local SARB as well as pursuing her new role on the State SARB. She says, “I have already started to immerse myself in learning about this new endeavor, I look forward to bringing information and knowledge back to our county in hopes of helping our families in need.”
