Sheriff's Deputies May Cite Violators in Covid-19 "Essential Travel" Updated Education & Enforcement.

Sonora, CA...Tuolumne County Health Officer Dr. Eric Sergienko released updated orders for our county yesterday. The order specifically outlines what “essential travel” means and what activities “essential travel” includes. In addition to the clarification from the county health officer, the Bureau of Reclamation and the Unites States Forest Service have increased their efforts to close recreational access points throughout the county. Tuolumne County has been fortunate to have only one confirmed case of Covid-19. Our neighboring counties continue to battle the virus with Stanislaus County announcing 81 confirmed cases and Calaveras County with five confirmed cases.

Our goal from the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has been education. We want to make sure our community understands the importance of limiting travels to essential business, practicing social distancing, and doing our part to slow the spread of this virus. We want to thank the majority of our community for following the state and local orders and we are grateful for their compliance and efforts. However, there is a portion of both local and non-local community members who are not mindful of the consequences of not following the orders; their actions jeopardize the health of Tuolumne County. With the health and safety of our community at the forefront of our mission, we are left with little option but to supplement our education efforts with enforcement action. We will utilize discretion and common sense, while basing each enforcement action on the totality of the circumstances and individual merit.

We will continue to utilize education as our primary method; however, we will also utilize enforcement to help shape the behavior of those who willfully neglect to follow the orders in place. Anyone who willfully defies the health officer’s order will be subject to a citation pursuant to California Government Code section 8665. The penalty includes a fine not exceeding $1000.00 and/or imprisonment not to exceed six months.

We cannot emphasize enough how much we appreciate the sacrifices everyone has made to ensure the health and safety of our families, friends and neighbors during these challenging times. Your partnership and support drive the Sheriff’s Office to continue serving our community with the highest level of professionalism and dedication.

Bill Pooley

Half the time you don't punish the many crooks/dopers this much! Regardless, I support this new effort but lets get a little harder the the many dregs of our society as well.

Call Calaveras Coutny Sheriff department they are telling people its fine if they come up here....they are not protecting us. Ask them why they are not enforcing non essential travel...Maybe they should follow Sonora? Do your job Calaveras County Sheriff Department and protect the people that live here. People are coming here from all over exposing our residents when they are not suppose to be traveling the next few weeks the numbers will explode because they are not doing their jobs!

Does anyone seriously believe their virus numbers?
Posted on: 2020-04-07 17:46:31   By: Anonymous
There is no way in h3ll that they only have one case there. They have several casinos. They are on the way to Yosemite. They have a large homeless problem. Their crime stats are very high, and many of those criminals travel back and forth from the valley to prey on the county.

Now it could be their rich enclaves are flying out to other counties to be treated at their other homes. But there is no way they do not have more cases there. There is something very corrupt with their stated cases. And now they are letting prisoners out...why...if no cases?

This sounds like a form of Communism. If people want to live irresponsibly then that is there business. There is no law that says you can't go to different places.

comments like the last show your uneducated, irresponsible and selfishness . You in fact do have a responsibility to stop mouthing off as though your opinion on this issue matters-it does not when others can be put at risk because you foolishly advocate for your fellow dregs. I know you'll have to have a dictionary by your side to interpret alot here ( presuming you even know how to use one) but truly -just STFU and crawl back into your high- its the only way you get through your miserable existence
