CHP San Andreas Area Advises May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Calaveras County, CA....San Andreas Area Commander Lt. J. R. Pelfanio would like to remind you that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in California. In 2007, five of the thirteen fatal collisions in the CHP San Andreas’ jurisdiction were involving motorcyclists. Three crossed over the double yellow lines in a curve were hit head on by another vehicle and the other two failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and ran off the roadway edge. This year, one of the four fatal collisions has involved a motorcyclist which ran off the roadway edge.....

Calaveras and Alpine Counties have several motorcycle related events in the month of May, including an annual Mothers Day Run and Frog Jump. As an avid motorcyclist, Lt. Pelfanio knows first hand the pleasures and dangers of riding. “The Motherlode offers beautiful country to ride upon, however our roads are very unforgiving” Lt. Jerry Pelfanio said. “There are few shoulders or wide turnouts and very few passing lanes in Calaveras County. Every rider and motorist is encouraged to share the road safely. Proper training and safety equipment, including helmet, leathers and gloves, are vital. As a motorcyclist, you don’t have that protective barrier of metal and safety restraints in your favor” said Pelfanio.

Young motorcycle riders under 18 are required to attend a motorcycle safety course prior to getting their DMV Motorcycle endorsement. What several adults don’t realize is the course is open to all and a great refresher even to experienced riders.

Last year, nearly 63,000 students attended training courses at one of the 114 California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) training sites throughout California. CMSP is California’s official motorcycle safety and training program administered by the CHP.

To enroll in a CMSP course, call 1(877) RIDE-411 or visit their website at www.ca-msp.org .

The CHP has also posted an informational video titled “Motorcycle Safety - Thrill? Or Buzz Kill?” on its website at www.chp.ca.gov. Motorcyclists need to be aware of the added danger they're in every day. This video will show you how to ride safer, and arrive alive.
