23rd Annual Calaveras County Science Fair~By Hanna Heath
Angels Camp, CA....The 23rd Annual Calaveras County Science Fair went on this weekend at the Calaveras County Board of Education Office. Students who entered their project participated in interviews for the judging of their experiment. Projects were judged in two categories, experiments and displays. Some of the experiment titles include: does gender affect lung capacity, CO2 Unleashed, Water Filter, What container keeps fresh the longest, and the dark and light plant project. We spoke with Gabby Reed who is the creater of the dark and light plant project who is in the 5th grade at Christian Family Learning Center. She recently entered her project at her school science fair and placed 2nd and then was asked to enter her project in the county science fair.
"I had two experiments, plant A that I placed in sunlight without water and it died and plant B with no sunlight and water and it lived," shared Gabby. "I enjoyed being creative and putting together my demonstration board."
Below are the areas of judging for the display section:
1. CLARITY AND SKILL (25)
a. Neat? Clean? Workmanship - durability? 0-5

c. Balanced presentation of material? Simply presented? 0-5

3. THOROUGHNESS (15)
a. Lab notebook clean, organized, table of contents? 0-5
b. Would the exhibit benefit from photos, models, art? 0-5

4. CREATIVE ABILITY (20)

Plaques were presented to the first, second and third place winners
(individual or group projects) at each grade level. All participants received a Participation Ribbon. The most outstanding project of the Science Fair received the Grand Prize award. Also, The California Native Plant Society gave a special award and a gift for the most outstanding project dealing with plants.
Adam Shartle was the 2008 Calaveras County Science Fair Winner. Congratulations Adam!
