Kathryn (KC) Seiler, a 2004 graduate of Bret Harte High School and a runner-up Princess in the 2004 Miss Calaveras pageant, has been accepted to the Crossroads Africa program and will be traveling to remote Africa this summer on a medical outreach program. Kathryn will be living in the hospital weekdays and traveling to remote clinics during the weekends. “I am really excited about this opportunity”, said Kathryn. “I am looking forward to reaching out to the sick, many of whom suffer from AIDS and malaria. This will be such a unique opportunity to see a health care system so much different from the healthcare in the United States.”
The Crossroads Africa program has sent over 11,000 persons in the last 49 summers to more than 40 African countries. The purpose of their programs is for young adults from all over the country to work at the grassroots level with young Africans. Their motto is “make a difference for others, see the difference in yourself”. In addition to their Medical Outreach program, Crossroads Africa also provides Community Construction, Agriculture/Reforestation, Education Training and Women’s Development projects.
Part of the adventure for Kathryn will be just getting there. “It will take me some 36 hours by plane from New York with 5 stops, including Paris, Dubai, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza and Bukoba,” she said. “The final leg is on a 14 seat plane built in Czeckslovakia and landing on a short dirt runway, then a 2 hour bus ride to the village in which we will be staying.”
Kathryn is the daughter of Bob and Susan Seiler who reside in Arnold. Since enrolling at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo in the fall of 2004, Kathryn has developed a passion for the medical profession. She will be graduating in June 2009 with a degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Biology. She plans to enter medical school in 2010 with a goal of becoming a pediatrician or emergency room physician.
“The program is not cheap,” states Kathryn, “but I’m excited to be fundraising on my own and know I worked hard to get myself there. I need to raise $3500 by June and any small donation would be greatly appreciated!” Anyone who would like to assist with Kathryn’s expenses for her Africa volunteer program this summer may do so by making a donation to Crossroads Africa, c/o Kathryn Seiler, at Guaranty Bank, 479 S. Main Street, PO Box 70 Angels Camp, CA 95222.
