Take The Bite Out of Mosquito Season
Spring has arrived in California which means the start of the West Nile virus season. Prevention of mosquito breeding and personal protection from mosquito bites are the two most important actions community members can take to prevent infection. To date in 2008, there are five counties in California with West Nile Virus activity (Sacramento, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego). A total of nine birds have tested positive for the virus. The virus has recently been detected in one mosquito pool and one sentinel chicken flock in California. There are no horse, squirrel, or human cases in the State at this time.....
During the 2007 West Nile virus season, Calaveras County experienced mild activity. There were three positive birds, one in Railroad Flat and two in Copperopolis. There were no humans, horses or squirrels that tested positive during the 2007 season in Calaveras County.
People get West Nile virus from the bite of infected mosquitoes. Although there was limited local activity last year, the virus is established in California and in Calaveras County. There were 380 human cases statewide during 2007 and 1,395 infected birds were identified.
Spring rains and early watering of lawns and plants are providing the conditions needed for local mosquito breeding. The warmer temperatures also increase the likelihood of mosquito breeding and with that comes increased likelihood of West Nile virus. The Environmental Health Department provides mosquito abatement service and mosquito-eating fish. County residents can call 754.6383 for services or send a request online at www.ccvector.com.
People over 50 years of age and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for serious illness or death if infected. There were 20 West Nile virus-related deaths in California last year. “Persons with symptoms of high fever, headache, stiff neck or muscle weakness should seek immediate medical attention” advised Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer. He urged that everyone be aware of the need to prevent mosquito breeding and mosquito bites.
West Nile virus infection can be prevented. Dress for mosquito protection with long sleeves and long pants when you are out at dawn or dusk. Drain all standing water near your home. If you have large pools of standing water, swimming pools at vacant homes or animal drinking troughs, place mosquito fish or dunks in the water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Wear DEET, oil of eucalyptus or picaridin for an effective mosquito repellent when outdoors. Follow the directions on the container carefully.
West Nile virus can cause serious illness and death in horses. West Nile virus is preventable in horses if given vaccine. The vaccine for horses must be given every year. It is important to check with your veterinarian on a booster. Early spring is the ideal time to protect your horses.
The State Department of Public Health is testing dead birds for West Nile virus. Dead birds can be reported to the State by calling 1.877.WNV.BIRD or at www.westnile.ca.gov. The Public Health Department will track confirmed positive local cases in humans, horses, squirrels, and bird cases and post the information weekly on the Public Health website at www.co.calaveras.ca.us.
