615 Marijuana Plants, 100 Roosters, 50 Hens, Dog & Cat at Wagon Wheel Drive Grow

Copperopolis, CA...On 8/28/2019, the Calaveras Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Unit served a search warrant for illegal marijuana cultivation on a location in the 3000 block of Wagonwheel Drive in Copperopolis. During the investigation, Deputies located 615 growing marijuana plants growing in areas surrounding the house. Additionally, Deputies discovered a dog, a cat, and over 150 chickens housed in small pens which included approximately 100 large roosters. Numerous dead chickens were found in the pens with live chickens.

Calaveras County Code Compliance was contacted due to the unsafe electrical and living conditions, while Calaveras County Animal Services was contacted in regards to the chickens.

The residence and other structures were red tagged as uninhabitable by Code Compliance. Due to the absence of anybody to provide care for the chickens as well as the conditions in which they were kept, the chickens, dog, and cat were collected by Animal Services and are currently being cared for.

No persons were located on site, however numerous items of evidence were collected from the scene. The investigation regarding animal cruelty and illegal cultivation of marijuana is continuing.

If only, a few of these commenters get the attention of the eradication team. Their needs will be satisfied for sure. It is obvious from the posts they make. Perhaps the next bust will be you....

It would be great if three of our supervisors stopped advertising our county as a great place to grow cannabis.

So glad that our Sheriff's Dept. is eradicating. A tiny amount of people (190 unless the Michelle Plotnik gets her way - then it's 700) out of approx. 45,100 people want to grow marijuana commercially. That is less than .4% which is point four percent. Let people smoke, eat, and drink what they want. Commercial grows and their huge water and other EHS issues go somewhere else.

I laugh at the idiots who scream how pot bans don't work, that the criminals will ignore the ban and keep growing, and then turn around and proclaim how we need to ban guns. Because, somehow, gun bans will work and criminals will stop using them.

It's not a ban. You get to eat edibles, smoke it, do whatever you want. Just don't make the rest of us have to smell the stuff, suffer through the wretched multiple grow seasons, sit through increased traffic because you hire seasonal workers instead of locals. This is especially stupid when your one big selling point was you were gonna make jobs. Bull. Now our already stretched thin housing issues are going to be that much worse because you don't plan for housing for your workers. What a bunch of malarkey. 190 do not get to boss around 45k people just so they can continue to make stupid business decisions. Move on.

Should the SO continue these efforts, I hope the county will see fit to increase the Animal Services' budget. It's that department and staff that must now house, care and feed all these animals. This also includes another 20 or 30 horses apparently abandoned on a Burson/Wallace property last week. It's my understanding that all are now at the fairgrounds.

I would suspect marijuana or other drugs are definitely involved with the horse situation. Keep the ban.
