Murphys Community Club Announces Forty Percent Increase in Membership
Murphys, CA....The membership roll of the Murphys Community Club (MCC) has swelled by more than forty percent according to board member Sue Friedman. “Last year the club had 265 members,” states Friedman, who is the membership chair. “Since January, 115 new people have joined bringing the total to 370. As far as we can tell, this is the largest number of members in the club’s 60 year history.”.....
Under the leadership of its president, Michal Houston, and with an active board of directors, MCC instituted several new programs last year and made major improvements in its prime responsibility, the much-used Murphys Community Park.
First Fridays in the Park, a series of four summertime events where families could gather, listen to good music, purchase food or bring their own picnic proved to be very popular. In addition, the park was the scene for one of the Calaveras Arts Council’s “Music in the Park” and a patriotic concert by the Air National Guard of the West Band.
The club also inaugurated a series of quarterly Town Hall Meetings held in the Native Daughters Hall. Subjects such as “What’s New in Murphys” and “Health Care in the Mother Lode” were very well received.
The traditional Murphys Homecoming was given a new look by MCC with a concert by the Calaveras Community Band and the first annual Promenade to the Park. The popular event retained the popular Nostalgia Luncheon and the Murphys Library’s duck races.
The festive Holiday Dinner Dance held at Ironstone Vineyards continued to grow in popularity.
“We are so pleased the residents of our area have shown their enthusiasm for the club’s increased programs by becoming members,” says Houston. “We look forward to another active year building on the successes of 2007.”
A major new project being undertaken by the club is the installation of shade sails over the children’s playground to ward off the summer sun that makes the climbing apparatus unpleasant or unusable. Among the fundraising activities associated with this project is a raffle offering a luxurious seven day, six night stay at Villa Mira Mar in Cabo San Lucas for as many as eight people. Houston will be happy to provide full details to anyone calling 728-2788.
Anyone wishing to join the Murphys Community Club can send a check, $25 for family members, $50 for business membership, to the club at Post Office Box 394, Murphys CA 95247. Contributions to help sustain the park for future generations may be sent to the same address.
