Body Found in Burned Vehicle Along Hwy 4 & Suspect Booked in Calaveras Jail

Copperopolis, CA...On May 29, 2019, at about 7:07 AM Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a vehicle on fire near the intersection of Lower Telegraph RD and Hwy 4. Fire personnel and Calaveras County Deputies were dispatched to the scene. Once the fire was extinguished a body was located inside the vehicle. Investigators were summoned to the scene and subsequently took over the investigation. The cause of death is undetermined at this time. Investigators learned there may have been a citizen attempting to extinguish the fire with a hand held fire extinguisher prior to the fire department arriving. Investigators would like to speak with that person to gain more information regarding the scene prior to the fire overtaking the vehicle. There is no additional information at this time.

Update 1930 hrs.

Investigators from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and Cal Fire remained on the scene throughout the day processing the scene and evidence. A Cal Fire Captain observed a male subject in a field who appeared to be hiding. The Cal Fire Captain notified detectives who were still on the scene and a male subject was found hiding in the grass and refused to comply. The subject stated he was armed with a firearm and was making threats toward law enforcement and suicidal statements. The subject was hiding in an area right off Highway 4 and Telegraph Road west of Copperopolis California. Highway 4 was shut down by CHP in both directions for an extended period of time. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and two K-9s arrived at the scene. A Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiator spoke with the subject in an attempt to get the subject to come out from where he was hiding. The subject kept repeatedly claiming he was armed and refused to come out. The subject was subsequently taken into custody by Calaveras County Sheriff’s K-9 Knox and the SWAT Team.

Evidence was found linking the male subject to the car with the deceased person. The subject was arrested transported and booked into the Calaveras County Jail. Identification of the suspect is pending at the time of this media release. The deceased person’s identity has not yet been confirmed and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause and or manner of death.

Sergeant Greg Stark or a Sheriff’s spokesperson will be available tomorrow morning (5/30/19) for interviews or subsequent questioning. Based upon the evidence at the scene Sheriff’s Investigators are treating this case as a homicide pending further results of the autopsy and evidence processing.

Cal Fire Investigators, CHP and ACPD Officer and K-9 assisted in this investigation and apprehension.
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are encouraging anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office at (209) 754-6500.

You forgot the speed freak killers and our harboring of pedophiles. We had father ogrady, then father kelly and countless others. I guess it's easier just to forget. But not the victims nor victim's families. Calaveras county..put some paint on her now shes fresh and brand new. Nothing ever happened, we never had a meth problem either. Let alone meth labs! No not in my town...

I believe it's because many of us are relative newcomers in the past 10 plus years. Didn't mean to be disrespectful but had to research Ng and the speed freak killers. Then found a link to another story about the Russian mob supposedly eliminating problem people in New Melones. Yes, some pretty horrific occurrences in years past.

Those Russian Mafia Victims were Dead before their weighted bodies were Dumped In Melones.

The FBI pulled eight or ten bodies from the lake before Fish And Game halted them, because they had caught their limit.

I think I'd rather see cannabis farming then you alcoholic's farming. Just the drunk drivers kill a minimum 10,000 lives every year just in the 🇺🇸 alone.
Let's not even get into the lives of the surviving loved ones of the deceased or the billions of dollars of the health cost, property damage and ins cost.
Back to the story let's hope our law enforcement finds what exactly went on here and the story told

The lunatics are those who start smoking pot, move on to meth and so on. Most of the problem people in this world more often than not have a drug history. Pot leads to lazy, unmotivated people, it weakens their brains so they become so vulnerable to so many things that just reduce them into becoming basically useless and non-productive to society. This country needs a total war on drugs including not allowing pot farming! Medicinal pot needed, let a clean corporation grow it, not a bunch of smelly dirty hippies who really could care less about our environment.

LOL, Pot is not the problem. Alcohol, meth, opioids...look there before you start preaching about something you clearly know nothing about. What? You want to drink your beer and pop your prescribed meds then preach about the evils of cannibals? Step into the 90s Grandpa.

Really? If I didn’t have cannibis, I’d be bed ridden, with zero quality of life because that is what pharmacological medications did to me. Now I’m a working musician, take care of my own home. Am a productive and redirected member of our community.. I am also recognized by Stanford University Hospital for the changes in my health due to the elitist of those awful medications and replacing with cannibis. when I hear people like you who are naive to the benefits I feel you need education. Pot does not lead to harder drugs. People looking to escape reality turn to harder drugs.

A burst to your bubble, whether it be alcohol, pot or another drug, they all cause accidents while driving under the influence and kill innocent people, quit trying to make out like pot is OK and a non harmful substance. People are arrested on a regular basis for non alcohol related DUI's. Even with cannabis legalization, there is still and will always be a black market that undercuts a legitimate one, with it brings crime of all types including murder. In this case nothing has been released about what caused this situation and assuming that it is related is naive on anyone's part.

The issue I have with your post on preferring cannabis farming to "alcohol farming" is that just because one of them is bad does not make the other good. What will happen is that we will now have drunks and those stoned out of their minds on pot all driving.
