Music of the America's Featured in Next Arts Committee of Northeast Calaveras County (ACNECC)
Calaveras County, CA....The next concert of the Arts Committee of Northeast Calaveras County (ACNECC), the budding arts organization serving the communities of West Point, Wilseyville, Glencoe and Rail Road Flat, will take place on Sunday, April 13, starting at 3 pm in the Rail Road Flat Community Hall........
The concert will feature « Music of the Americas, » popular music from Argentina, Brazil, and other Latin countries, as well as the United States. Unlike music following the classical tradition fostered in the churches and palaces of Western Europe, the « street » music of the Americas grew spontaneously out of the folk traditions of immigrant workers from a variety of origins, including Western and Eastern Europe and Africa. Much of the music, which has an immediate, infectious appeal, was created to accompany original dance forms, such as the tango in Argentina and the samba and bossa nova in Brazil. It is the kind of music that makes you want to get up and dance !
The program on April 13 will feature traditional Argentinian tango music, Brazilian sambas and selections by Ernesto Nazareth, known as the Brazilian Scott Joplin. Popular music from the United States, arising out of a similar tradition of folk music centered in black culture, will include blues and ragtime.
The performers are Romanian violinist Corina Stoian and cellist Alex Dumitrache, joining local pianist Ron Brickman. Before moving to the United States last year, Stoian had a prestigious career as a concert violinist in her native Romania and in Germany. A winner of international awards, her performances are praised not only for their technical virtuosity but also their intensity and passion. Dumitrache was trained in Romania’s most distinguished music academies and did graduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has performed in music festivals throughout Europe, Canada and the United States.
Tickets for the event are $12 for adults and $6 for children through high school. They may be purchased at Sam Snead Real Estate in West Point, the Rail Road Flat Store, and at the door. Call 293-7979 for more information.
