Google Thinks Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" Speech is "Fake News" ~ John Hamilton

Arnold, CA...We almost never talk about our news outlets in context of the news. The news is the news not the outlet. What happened yesterday to us however we believe is newsworthy. As some of you may know we are attempting to build a small national network of news outlets that cover vacation centric small markets that are similar in demographics to our local counties. Starting yesterday and continuing till early this morning we received "demonetization notices" on several of our sites. In two of the notices it specifically listed Martin Luther King's Speech as an item that did not have value. If presenting a speech from a historical figure on the national holiday in his honor is deemed as not only seen as "not having value" but deemed worthy of punishing news outlets that do so then news that only rewards "Click Bait" headlines and drives division is here to stay.

We hope that Google made a simple mistake and is not actively trying to suppress timely publication of historical events and speeches in their actual context and entirety.

There are several speeches and addresses that all of us should read on a consistent basis. Some of them we think include. Martin Luther Kings "I Have a Dream" Speech, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, The Declaration of Independence, Washington's Farewell Address, Several of Winston Churchill's Speeches, JFK's Inaugural Address, Reagan's "Tear Down This Wall" Address, FDR's "Nothing to Fear" Speech and many more.

We believe news in a historical context matters.

We believe long format news and videos of an entire speech or events matters. It preserves context and helps foster even handed debate and progress on issues.

We believe timely reminders of historical events puts today's events in context and provides better outcomes for all of us.

If Google punishes CSPAN like or long format news and only rewards Buzzfeed, MSNBC vs Fox or Huffpo vs Breitbart then the future of news in our society is doomed.

We believe that all of us left or right agree on the bulk of the issues and that we are being artificially driven into arbitrary left or right groups that threaten a functioning society.

We also know that as a publisher writing anything calling into question Google's actions can have disastrous results for that publisher.

We only ask that Google not just reward "Click Bait" controversial news.

Keep up the Good Work. Sometimes I get mad at the stories you post but I never doubt the accuracy, or at least that you are passing along the information accurately even if I disagree

Yes, because a speech from the historical figure for which the holiday is named as no real value. Or, report, not enough to increase user traffic. A sad commentary on both the internet and our society.

John, name the outlets you get your "news" from.
I would hazard to guess, they are alt reich fake news outlets.
List them if you have the cahonnes.

The Oligarchy has used a successful plan- buy the media in many countries, America is only one. In most all democracies that have veered right, the media was bought by Billionaires, with the information people bought, the news is used for propaganda.
The supreme examples in America is Fox noise, and hate radio. Try to listen to talk radio anywhere in America, it is all hate, fear based Conservative propaganda.
These are not American values, these are once alt reich fringe voices monetized by the Billionaires to end regulation, and taxation of the wealthy.

      Name the outlets John.

White House news is directly from White House under this administration just as we did for the Obama administration and also the Bush Admin. Law enforcement info is directly from the agencies. Traffic stories, weather etc don't have an "agenda"

I wondered what this profane post was all about, so looked for a more rational source. Found it:

          https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/anti-catholic-bigotry-is-alive-in-the-us-senate/2019/01/17/e0ad0a14-1a8f-11e9-8813-cb9dec761e73_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.2c1f0ef7a2bd

So the issue is that Horono and Harris questioned a judicial candidate on whether he subscribed to the Knights of Columbus positions on marriage equality and right to life. The candidate was a member of the K of C. This line of questioning could be considered inappropriate in that the K of C's positions are the same as the positions of the Catholic church. Obviously a candidate should not be rejected for being Catholic (or Muslim, or whatever).

I think the questioning was fair. They didn't question the candidate's religion but asked if his judicial rulings would be guided by those tenants of the K of C. SCOTUS has ruled that women have a right to choose and that gay people can marry. It is fair to ask a candidate how they balance that against the teachings of the Catholic church.

          And now you know.

The alt left WaPo is a rational source? You can kiss mine after you kiss the bigot's.

The US Senate rebuked the fascist. What more proof do you need to see Hirono is an anti Catholic bigot?

Hirono's actions are just the tip of the spear in the Democrat Media Industrial Complex war on Catholics in the county. The absolute smear of the Covington boys is just an example of what's to come by the fake news media and their lackey Democrats.

The billionaires are certainly trying to control the media, but I've seen no evidence that they control what John posts. Sinclair News taking over more and more radio stations and news outlets is a much bigger concern.

And I agree radio commentary is mostly hate radio. I don't think most billionaires are actually in agreement with the racism and misogyny that is broadcast there but that hate draws in listeners that are then indoctrinated with the part of the message the billionaires do support: government is bad, regulation is bad, minimum wage is bad, etc.

It is interesting that left-wing tv does fine (e.g., MSNBC) but left-wing radio fails (e.g., Air America). NPR seems to be doing fine but I do not consider it left-wing. It is certainly not as far off center as Limbaugh.

Cannabis has gone mainstream. There are now companies listed on exchanges that market it. Some have market caps in the 10s of billions of dollars.

              https://www.zacks.com/stock/news/348799/4-marijuana-stocks-that-look-profitable-in-2019

Calaveras county is not attractive to most industries because it is far from major highways and airports, has no university and has relatively few educated workers. But cannabis is an industry that would come to Calaveras county if allowed to do so. So...IMO, the choice is to grab the opportunity or to remain an impoverished county. It's not like Amazon or the next Tesla Gigafactory are coming to Calaveras county.

Agree the news that gets all the play here is very right leaning
You may use the White House as a source, but they lie and skew the facts so much they could be called Fake News

Our position is this....Whichever party controls the White House has the bully pulpit during that term. Obama had it during his 8 years, Bush had it, etc. Presidential statements and actions become history and are news whether you agree or disagree with the statements or actions. Even if you felt Obamas's actions or statements were unwise or even untrue. Same goes for Trump. Now we have an occupant of 1600 that thrives on controversy and gets fuel from it.

We have never had a president who lied so frequently as Trump. Posting his statements without the corresponding FactCheck is agreeing to participate in his misinformation campaign.

This is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with Trump's point of view. Trump repeatedly misstates (i.e., lies about) verifiable FACTS. Obama and Bush occasionally had misstatements too, but they were far less frequent and, IMPORTANTLY, when they were called on it, they stopped making that statement. Bush quit saying there were WMD in Iraq. Obama quit saying you could keep your doctor. Trump is still saying he passed the largest tax cut in US history and that Mexico will pay for the wall. And those are just two of the more than 8000 lies documented by Washington Post FactCheckers.

John- Thanks for listing the news outlets.
It appears as you mention the carrot and stick approach is being employed to filter news to their point of view. There are other sources that are available. In vacation areas such as the Motherlode, I would say probably the demographics of conservative vrs liberal is about 50-50. The clients coming from the Valley- conservative, Bay Area- liberal.
The demographics from the voting results of the county are predominately Conservative.

The cries of "fake news" come from mostly conservatives , liberals bemoan the exclusion of many news stories due to the producers of programs preferring not to offend their sponsors. Both are guilty of filtering the news.

The media has a direct influence on public opinion, it's how they receive information. How, what the outlets report the news does influence opinions the public makes. It is a heavy responsibility to inform the public impartially.
It appears the distrust of the media is deserved depending on the political preferences of the viewer/listener.

The media is the "fourth estate" , a label denoting the power it has in society.
Some say it is the fourth branch of government.
