President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Farewell Address, January 17, 1961

Washington, DC...One thing to always remember even when supporting our Military is that apart from being a necessary and vital component is that it is a big business. President Dwight Eisenhower reminded us of that in his farewell address that follows. "My fellow Americans: Three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the Presidency is vested in my successor. This evening I come to you with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen. Like every other citizen, I wish the new President, and all who will labor with him, Godspeed. I pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all.

Our people expect their President and the Congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment, the wise resolution of which will better shape the future of the Nation.

My own relations with the Congress, which began on a remote and tenuous basis when, long ago, a member of the Senate appointed me to West Point, have since ranged to the intimate during the war and immediate post-war period, and, finally, to the mutually interdependent during these past eight years.

In this final relationship, the Congress and the Administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the national good rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the Nation should go forward. So, my official relationship with the Congress ends in a feeling, on my part, of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together.

We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.

Throughout America's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations. To strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad.

Progress toward these noble goals is persistently threatened by the conflict now engulfing the world. It commands our whole attention, absorbs our very beings. We face a hostile ideology-global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose, and insidious in method. Unhappily the danger it poses promises to be of indefinite duration. To meet it successfully, there is called for, not so much the emotional and transitory sacrifices of crisis, but rather those which enable us to carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle-with liberty at stake. Only thus shall we remain, despite every provocation, on our charted course toward permanent peace and human betterment.

Crises there will continue to be. In meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties. A huge increase in newer elements of our defense; development of unrealistic programs to cure every ill in agriculture; a dramatic expansion in basic and applied research-these and many other possibilities, each possibly promising in itself, may be suggested as the only way to the road we which to travel.

But each proposal must be weighed in the light of a broader consideration: the need to maintain balance in and among national programs-balance between the private and the public economy, balance between cost and hoped for advantage-balance between the clearly necessary and the comfortably desirable; balance between our essential requirements as a nation and the duties imposed by the nation upon the individual; balance between action of the moment and the national welfare of the future. Good judgment seeks balance and progress; lack of it eventually finds imbalance and frustration.

The record of many decades stands as proof that our people and their government have, in the main, understood these truths and have responded to them well, in the face of stress and threat. But threats, new in kind or degree, constantly arise. I mention two only.

A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction.

Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peace time, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea.

Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United State corporations.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every state house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.

In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been over shadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system-ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society.

Another factor in maintaining balance involves the element of time. As we peer into society's future, we-you and I, and our government-must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.

Down the long lane of the history yet to be written America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.

Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield.

Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose difference, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. Because this need is so sharp and apparent I confess that I lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. As one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war-as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years-I wish I could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight.

Happily, I can say that war has been avoided. Steady progress toward our ultimate goal has been made. But, so much remains to be done. As a private citizen, I shall never cease to do what little I can to help the world advance along that road.

So-in this my last good night to you as your President-I thank you for the many opportunities you have given me for public service in war and peace. I trust that in that service you find somethings worthy; as for the rest of it, I know you will find ways to improve performance in the future.

You and I-my fellow citizens-need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under God, will reach the goal of peace with justice. May we be ever unswerving in devotion to principle, confident but humble with power, diligent in pursuit of the Nation's great goals.

To all the peoples of the world, I once more give expression to America's prayerful and continuing inspiration:

We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love."

How come Congress can give Mexico and South America 10 Billion to deter Illegal Immigrants but cannot give the Wall the 5 Billion it needs? Isn't that just another case of throwing Money at something in hopes it fixes it? At least with the Wall we all have something we see for the Money. With the anti Illegal Immigrant Money after it gets into the hands of those Governments there is no guaranteed return. Just stating the obvious.

Well our idiot negotiator/president just gave the Taliban a big Christmas present, the withdral of half our troops in Afghanistan, 7,000 troops. What concessions did he get from the Taliban for this? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Great deal maker, right? Trump is abandoning our allies around the world, including Syria. This enables these groups to strenghten and further their plans for the destruction of America. Eisenhower would have Trump taken out and shot for the traitor he is. Complete flatfooted, draft dodging, ass kissing scum of a child.

          About Afghanistan:
We never belonged there. The only real reasons we have been there since the earliest of days was for the precious metals and the CIA Opium Supply. Follow the Money Trails backwards. Thousands injured or dead for the Globalist Bankers!! Trump is right bring them home!! Only the globalists are the ones crying about our troops coming home. Real Americans are saying "it is about damn time!!"

This isn't true. Trump believed the same nuts you must be reading on the internet and had a rant about taking the precious metals. Trump said the Chinese were getting them and didn't even have troops there. Willbur Ross, Commerce Sect'y, said he'd look into it. Turned out the Chinese have an "arrangement" with the Afghan government but are doing no mining. No one is mining BECAUSE there is no infrastructure needed for mining. Things like roads and electricity. This is just another right-wing nut job FAKE NEWS item.

My info is from Bob Woodward's book "Fear." I recommend the book to anyone who wants the inside story of the Trump presidency. It's the most unbiased, credible account I've found.

Do not forget the original intent of Congress sending US troops to Afghanistan.
It was to get Bin Laden.
We did, it's done, mission accomplished.
US troops should have come home long ago from the longest war in US history. We do no good occupying and policing a nation where no army in history has won.
The Mongolians failed, the Chinese failed, Alexander the Great failed, The Romans failed, Napoleon failed, The British failed and so did the Soviets.
Time to go home and leave Afghanistan alone.

The absolute Number One thing that is ironic about the Liberal Progressive Socialist Leninist Marxist Fascist Communist leaning Democrats and the Republicans In Name Only is they blame one Man but yet excuse all of Congress yet in the same breath state that they hate Government??!!
Huh hello Congress is where all things move though not just one one Man. That one Man just signs the Checks and signs the Bills.

            About Syria and Afghanistan:
Another very obvious thing about this issue in that region is they have been at war since the dawn of recorded time. Go check your history of the region. It is a simple fact. If you are a Christian and you claim you read your Bible or The Torah or Talmud it plainly shows in the Scriptures the ongoing wars over time. One thing the Christians forget is a simple passage in The Bible which plainly states "The ways of peace they have not known". Isaiah 59:8 So if they have never known peace why should we be involved in their ongoing feudal tribal conflicts? Trump is right in pulling out of both conflicts. They are not our battles to be fought.

What are the money gains all of these people will lose out on by Building The Wall?
How many will be losing kick backs from Illegal Drug Money? How many in Congress are getting any kick backs? How many Corporations are getting kick backs? How many at Federal, State and City levels are getting kick backs??
Who really is losing money by not funding this Wall? Who are the players pushing extremely hard against the Wall?
Once you find all of the answers above it all comes together why they do not want this Wall?
My bet is you will find deep corruption from the Democrats to the Republicans In Name Only to major Corporations to Law Enforcement and yes the United Nations Globalists involved not just in Drugs but in Human Trafficking, Child Trafficking, Child Pornography, The Deep State and into the darkness of Satanism itself who want nothing more that to destroy our nation!
Think I'm wrong? Follow the money trails backwards!!
Do the research it is all out there in black and white and in full color layed out all across the internet. They put it directly in your face knowing you won't believe it can be real. That is why they are called "The Deep State".

The only reasons the Liberal Socialist Democrats and the Republicans In Name Only in Congress refuse to fund the wall is because they hate Trump and our country. They are traitors to their oath to defend and protect the Constitution.

The 5 billion is only a small down payment on a wall that would cost easily ten times that much before it could be completed, and the annual maintenance would likely be over a billion a year.
At this point, the wall is a vanity project for Trump that serves multiple purposes: 1. He needs to keep one of his campaign promises after failing to keep so many others,
        2. A distraction and diversion from the investigation that has sent him into a panic.
        3. A distraction from the massive damage his loose lips and tweets have caused to our Stock Market and soon the economy as a result.

More bad business decisions from a Man with a long history of making them.

Walls do not work is the Leftist's claim?
Walls worked pretty well in Roman times, Biblical times and others times how about that Great Wall of China keeping the Mongols at bay for thousands of years. Don't forget the Berlin Wall. How about those Prison Walls? Ya they do not work. Oh I forgot those Walls around a lot of Homes around us. Ya ya ya Walls don't work so how about we ban them and while we are at it all Doors on Houses too as those are a type of Wall to protect you so we cannot have that. Excuse the obvious snark but in reality the logic of the Left is as full of holes as a Colander for draining Water from Food.

19th century solution for a 21st century problem. Most illegals come in through normal portals of entry. Drugs are now flying over the wall on drones. The wall is a stupid idea.

Houses have doors because that is how bad guys would otherwise get in. A border wall will not stop the bad guys because that is not the main way they get in. I've explained this to you before, so it is disappointing that you continued to post the same bogus argument.

      Heaven has Walls!
If those who call themselves Christians will just read their Bibles it plainly states Heaven does indeed have Walls in the New Jerusalem. The Walls are so high they cannot be seen over and so thick nobody can dig through and there are 12 Gates.
Do those opposing The Border Wall believe they will get into The New Jerusalem in Heaven if they are not Legal Citizens? The Scriptures plainly state that you must be a Legal Citizen in order to enter Heaven. It is all right there in The Scriptures presented in many ways and wordings but the message is still the same. No illegals!!
There is a Wall around The New City to protect The Citizens. Imagine that built in protection. So what should be different between a Heaven the Christians believe in and our Nation?
If you call yourself a Christian and you claim you follow Christian values then you must admit "Heaven Has Walls". So if your Heaven has Walls why do you protest a Secure Border Wall here upon Earth that functions much the same way as The Wall around The New City in your concept of Heaven as lined out in your Bible.
Food for thought. Truth. The Pill everybody wants but many refuse to swallow.

We got a decent nuclear deal which all of Europe signed off, it is a verifiable agreement to stop nuclear weapon development.

I believe Dump will go before the US does exit the deal, it has not yet.

Eisenhower was for strong unions, and a leash on the military industrial complex.
He proposed the Interstate highway system.
This is what a Republican once was, now they are only all for the 1%, and screwing the 99%.

This is what true leadership was like.

The Dems are the party of the 1% now. The GOP are the ones working to help the working man.

No sane person can believe the GOP is trying to help the working man rather than the 1 %. Try to pay attention to reality.

I cannot wait for Trump’s farewell speech! Of course it will be only a few incoherent sentences about how great he was. Nothing like the speech here that is thoughtful and academic in its description of our world and goals for the future.
C’mon Mueller!

To believe the Republicans are representing the 99% is pure baloney.
That's some Kool Aid you are drinking.
The 2 tax cuts for those who didn't need it is all you need to know, the middle class and poor will pay more in Fed taxes now.
The tax cuts were sold as to create jobs, the facts are jobs declined, and wages went lower in the latest data.
Why you blind trump cult members cannot see the facts, numbers do not lie is the question.
trump is a religion for you, it's all faith, ignore the facts, and truth.

trump's removing forces in Syria and Afghanistan is causing many well seasoned pros to resign, another today in the effort against ISIS. 3,000 ISIS fighters captured will be released, ISIS is far from defeated, reminding us of GW bush and his "mission accomplished" lie.

America cannot have this illegitimate fringe administration end soon enough.
The malignant narcissistic dotard must go ASAP.

Thank You for posting the TRUTH about what has happened to the American worker under ANY Repubturd administration
It seems just when we are for the worker the ReTurds take over and ruin it for all of us
What makes me so frustrated, and have been for 40 years since I served in theVNW
Is why do do the ignorant, Racist, working (well they say they, work almost all are Republican liars that take the dole and blame the other party, I know several)
So I know they DONT work
But sit on their SORRY ASS and blame someone else
Really believe the biggest liar to ever hold office is for them
It boggles the mind to see he has 35%
Law and order is not a Repubturd value either
