Gross Domestic Product: Second Quarter Revised Up to 4.2% as Economy Rolls On

Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 4.2 percent in the second quarter of 2018 (table 1), according to the "second" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 2.2 percent.  The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 4.1 percent. With this second estimate for the second quarter, the general picture of economic growth remains the same; the revision primarily reflected upward revisions to nonresidential fixed investment and private inventory investment that were partly offset by a downward revision to personal consumption expenditures (PCE). Imports which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, were revised down. (see "Updates to GDP" on page 2).

Real gross domestic income (GDI) increased 1.8 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 3.9 percent in the first quarter. The average of real GDP and real GDI, a supplemental measure of U.S. economic activity that equally weights GDP and GDI, increased 3.0 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 3.1 percent in the first quarter (table 1).

The increase in real GDP in the second quarter reflected positive contributions from PCE, nonresidential fixed investment, exports, federal government spending, and state and local government spending that were partly offset by negative contributions from private inventory investment and residential fixed investment. Imports decreased (table 2).

The acceleration in real GDP growth in the second quarter reflected accelerations in PCE, exports, federal government spending, and state and local government spending, as well as a smaller decrease in residential fixed investment. These movements were partly offset by a downturn in private inventory investment and a deceleration in nonresidential fixed investment. Imports decreased after increasing in the first quarter.

Current‑dollar GDP increased 7.6 percent, or $370.9 billion, in the second quarter to a level of $20.41 trillion. In the first quarter, current-dollar GDP increased 4.3 percent, or $209.2 billion (table 1 and table 3).

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 2.3 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 2.5 percent in the first quarter (table 4). The PCE price index increased 1.9 percent, compared with an increase of 2.5 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 2.0 percent, compared with an increase of 2.2 percent.

Updates to GDP

The percent change in real GDP was revised up 0.1 percentage point from the advance estimate, reflecting upward revisions to nonresidential fixed investment, private inventory investment, federal government spending, and state and local government spending that were partly offset by downward revisions to PCE, residential fixed investment, and exports. Imports were revised down. For more information, see the Technical Note. A detailed Key Source Data and Assumptions"  file is also posted for each release. For information on updates to GDP, see the "Additional Information" section that follows.

US economy grew 4.2% in second quarter, faster than first reported
    Douglas Gillison,AFP•August 29, 2018

Washington (AFP) - The roaring growth of the US economy in the second quarter was even faster than first reported, with new numbers showing a bigger boost in corporate spending, the government reported Wednesday.

The uptick in estimates of second quarter spending by companies was sure to comfort President Donald Trump and supporters of December's sweeping corporate tax cuts who argue that lowering corporations' tax burdens will spur investment and growth.

Gross Domestic Product advanced at an annual rate of 4.2 percent in the April-to-June period, a tenth of a point faster than initial estimates showed last month and -- at nearly twice the first quarter's pacet -- he fastest growth in almost four years, according to the Commerce Department.

Analysts had been expecting a slight downward revision.

Thank you President Trump for Making America Great Again!

U.S. Workers Report Highest Job Satisfaction Since 2005
More jobs, fewer layoffs contribute to brighter career outlook
By Lauren Weber, WSJ, Aug. 29, 2018

Just more than half of U.S. workers—51%—said they were satisfied with their jobs in 2017, the highest level since 2005, according to a new report from The Conference Board, a business-research group.

Americans report feeling better about their pay along with a greater sense of job security, both features of an economy with a low unemployment rate and a long decline in layoffs. In July, jobless claims continued an extended post-recession slide and hit their lowest level in nearly 50 years.

President Trump just keeps on Winning!.... And so does Americans.

I'm only liking President Trump because he tries to do good for America, where all the real politicians do everything in their power to stop him. Good God folks, look at the stock market, if you have any type of retirement plan, you should be happy how this country is prospering under his leadership as all the democrats in power fight him all the way.
Being a democrat I'm pretty damn mad at my party for not trying to at least get along with Trump, it's like my party is anti-American.
It's all about what they can get, not what the people who elected them to do what we wanted.

Overall , wages have been declining for years, or stagnant.
Data shows that when the 1% get tax cuts, wages decline, when taxes are raised on the 1% wages rise.

The economy also is still is from Obama, a solid foundation .
Dump actually has caused more jobs to leave overseas, just another lie from the big liar.

Not to mention the huge deficit increase from his tax cut for the wealthy
            He is ruining this country
But at least his corrupt group is going down one by one, and he will be one of them as well
Then we can get this country back from the Russians

It's almost as good as the Obama era Q3 of 2014.

Obama turned the Great Recession into an economic boom that continues to this day. Trump has almost nothing to do with today's economy. His tax cut helped; his tariffs hurt it. Pretty much a wash.

You know, the one when the democrats lost and the Republicans took control has sky rocketed to all time highs? Working Americans never had it so good. Oh, that's the problem, Working Americans isn't it? You know, the ones making more then your minimum wage.

Nope. The stock market has continued in a straight line the upward trend that began in Obama's second year. Don't be a lazy Fox News bubble head; look it up. Trump has added nothing.

You can give Trump credit for not (yet) screwing up the Obama boom market.
