Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) Awards Advanced Manufacturing Scholarship to Bret Harte High School Student

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has presented an Advanced Manufacturing Scholarship to BHHS student, Nickolas Ratkovich. Nickolas received a $2,000 scholarship to begin his college studies in the Mechatronics/Electrical Technology field. Nicholas resides in San Andreas with proud parents Melissa & Peter Ratkovich.

At a very early age, Nicholas, developed a love of robotics. In elementary school, he was part of a Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV) team and competed at the state level. This interest continued on into high school. He joined 4-H while in the 3rd grade and raised a meat goat that first year. In 2009, he and his younger brother formed a partnership, Ratkovich Livestock, breeding and showing Boer goats. Their business now includes breeding sheep and some heifers. Over the past 9 years, Nick, has shown both sheep and cattle for the California State Fair and the Calaveras County Fair. Traveling to multiple national shows in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Arizona has earned Nicholas numerous awards and trophies.

Joining the FFA program as a freshman, Nick has earned multiple awards and degrees during his four-year involvement in FFA. These experiences have resulted in a confident, driven, well-rounded young man whose ultimate career goal is to become a robotics engineer. This fall, Nicholas will attend Sierra College, Rocklin, in the Mechatronics field (any system that involves electronics, mechanics and computer control).

The Advanced Manufacturing Scholarship was made possible by a recent grant from the Gene Haas Foundation. According to Foundation Administrator, Kathy Looman, Haas Automation, founded in 1983, is the leading builder of CNC machine tools. Haas understands that the U.S. is experiencing skills gaps in manufacturing jobs and seeks to close those gaps by offering grants to graduating seniors.

CCF is grateful to the Haas Foundation for their generous grant.

Nice job Nick!! Nice to see the students that take school seriously celebrated here on the Pine Tree. If only those low life posters chronically posting garbage here took school more seriously? Hell, at least their spelling would be improved.

Comments section making fun of a minor child’s hair, and discussing him having shaved pubes.
John sees this crap and leaves it up, because he’s a morals free jerk.
Advertisers, think about that when you’re considering where to park your ads.

So happy to see thepinetree cover the academic accomplishments of our students and not just sports. Maybe if thepinetree did more of that more students would get their priorities straight and focus on activities that might lead to a successful life.

Congratulations to Nick. Work your butt off from the first day of class and make sure you have the grades necessary to transfer to a first-rate 4 year college or university. That 4 year degree is your ticket to a satisfying and financially rewarding life.

Well said. Calaveras is a nice place to visit and perhaps live after one has completed an education and achieved success elsewhere. Congratulations, Nick!

      Agree completely.

Calaveras is indeed a place where successful people retire. Do the local high schools ever call some of those folks in to talk about career paths that the students might not otherwise be exposed to? Is career choice even covered in high school? They should do these things. Maybe even make it a formal mentoring program.

If this all does already exist, I will be grateful if someone will post more about it.

Sadly, the first priority is getting a principal to stay at BH for more than a year or two. Agree totally with your suggestion and hope someone who can help make it happen is reading.
