Calaveras Sheriff's Department Holds Hiring & Promotion Ceremony

San Andreas, CA...Throughout 2018, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office has been actively recruiting new employees. This morning during a public Promotional / Hiring / Affirmation of Office Ceremony, Sheriff Rick DiBasilio proudly swore in a large group of recently hired or promoted Sheriff’s employees. The list included the promotion of one patrol sergeant, three corporals, two senior dispatchers and two correctional officer corporals.

Eight new deputy sheriffs were swore in this morning that have all been hired in 2018 as well as six new correctional officers and three dispatchers.

Congratulations and thank you to all of the employees who took an oath today willing to protect and serve the citizens of Calaveras County.

Great news. Good to see that the ban did not cause the massive lay offs and cut backs predicted by the commercial growers.

Budget is done and approved. As for next year it is a normal cycle for the budget to change every year. Busy years you hire things slow down you lay off. Its the same for any business. It was just hocus pocus scare tactics the commercial growers put out.

Hungary’s history has been one of hardship and heartbreak. But the passion and stamina of soul has remained in the hearts of the Hungarian people. I’ve always been touched by Hungary’s national anthem, Himnusz, or “hymn”, written by the poet Kölcsey. Their anthem is a poetic prayer and unlike most anthems that focus on an expression of national pride, the Hungarian anthem is a direct, heartfelt plea to God. In the mid-20th century, during the years of strongest communist rule in Hungary, the words were not song, only the music was played. The communist government asked two of the most acclaimed artists of that time, a poet and composer, to rewrite the national anthem. Both refused. The next communist leader also tried, unsuccessfully, to have it changed. Hungary’s national anthem remains Himnusz. The first three lines:
O God, bless the nation of Hungary
        With your grace and bounty
Extend over it your guarding arm

My neighbor called the SO to report a guy in a truck with two dogs was camping out by their creek for two or three days. She initially asked if he was okay and he proceeded to tell her about all the recent losses in his life. He was walking around without a shirt and had a sidearm. Despite his pulling his truck onto private property, the dispatcher said, "It's not a crime to live out of your vehicle."

It wasn't just predicted by commercial growers, I think a lot of people believed this too. I mean come on, just look at our Stupidvisors actions, or should I say inaction?
I just hope these men and women in blue take extra precaution.
With our DA and Judges letting out felons caught with guns, or letting violent criminals who attack law enforcement officer while being arrested, out on minimum bail to keep living the dream, sooner or later an officers life will be on the line.

Welcome to Calaveras County, home of a growing percentage of tweakers, drunks and felons, born and raised.

Thanks for this. Tried to say above but most of them can only see the here and now. There are troubled times ahead... primarily because our county has no real revenue since so many also objected to more building. Combine that with a lot of people sitting on old property and paying ridiculously low taxes. This could have been a time to cash in but it appears yet another train has left the station without us.

Probably for the same reasons that you won't or haven't - because this is our home and are trying to work toward keeping this a community with adequate funding and services. That's a child-like, personal response instead of considering why our county has limited income.

Not to mention our school districts are spending down reserves to maintain services. Trouble with that is the state makes you keep so much in the bank; cross that line and it's receivership. Yes, our school budgets are different than the county's but it's the same financial issue. No more money coming in and spending more than ever.

Many leave because the pay here is the chits. That's why the buffoons who have businesses are clueless wondering why they can't keep a good employee. It's because you pay them minimum wage.
I've learned, if you have good employees, pay them well to keep them happy. If you're an a$$hole and a tightwad, you'll keep getting what you deserve.
    Pretty simple.

This article does not state that just as many deputies have left, that a good portion of the new hires have months of training ahead where at least 50 percent will not make it to solo patrol and does not replace the ones that are now looking to leave. Need some thinning at the top, not a happy place....

^ Obviously written by someone in the know. NOT a happy place to work. So many good people have left and now they are promoting people who aren’t ready because they have no one with enough time in. Mistakes will be made. Rights will be violated and lawsuits will be filed. Those at the top don’t care. As long as they have jobs. (And votes). Please people help make a change.

Employees leave because the County pay is low. The County pays less than surrounding Counties, so they get their training here then apply for jobs outside our County where they can get better pay. This has been discussed in front of the BOS by every department head. They can’t keep the people they have and can't get people to apply.

That's right. It has nothing to do with the Marijuana money its been this way for years. Yes they are using the Marijuana money in the budget because it cost the County departments much more to deal with the flood of issues that the Marijuana rush caused. Marijuana goes away so does the extra work load it caused.

Also has to do with the administration, long term employees with roots here are leaving because of their treatment by admin, it's not just the pay. Many are here for the quality of life versus working and living in large city areas. Been there and have done that, I know what I am talking about.... pay is not the end all for every choice in employment, where one wants to live and raise their family is also major part of the decision.....

I agree long term employees with roots here are leaving because of their treatment by admin, lack of step/pay increases or harassment. We see it all the time they lose a long-term employee who has the training and experience then can’t feel the position with an employee with the same experience. The County loses money because they have a financial investment in the employee and lose them. Its bad management.

Folks, 6 employees left the jail just in the last month!! Come on now. And most didn’t leave for more pay. They left because the admin makes it impossible to work there. The current sheriff won’t do anything about it because it is coming up on election time and he doesn’t want to cost himself any votes. The department heads go in front of the board and make excuses for why people are leaving but the reason is the department heads.

Yes, not the first time I've heard/read about night shift dispatch and the harshness with calls and with colleagues. Why does the dept allow her to continue with the unprofessional attitude? Is it a representation of upper management? She's not fully to be blamed, she gets away with it because she can.
