Markleeville, CA...(Ebbetts Pass Closed 5am to 3pm) Celebrating 38 years in California’s Alps (1980-2018) Recognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West. The Alpine County Chamber of Commerce invites riders to participate in the Tour of the California Alps – Death Ride®, while enjoying the magnificent scenery and warm hospitality of Alpine County! Registration along with the start and end point of the ride takes place at Turtle Rock Park just north (Hwy 89) of Markleeville, California. The five pass ride includes 129 miles and 15,000+ feet of lung busting climbing. You also have the option of riding one, two, three, four or five passes. For your safety, the first four passes will be closed at specific times to vehicular traffic.

This year’s ride returns riders to our infamous five pass course including:
• Monitor Pass (Highway 89) 8,314 feet
• Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4) 8,730 feet
• Carson Pass (Highway 88) 8,580 feet

Five pass finishers will receive a Five-Pass Pin and are eligible to purchase an exclusive Five-Pass Finisher Jersey.

The 2018 Tour of the California Alps – Death Ride® will affect three California highways; State Route 4 SR-4 Ebbetts Pass, SR-89 Monitor Pass and SR-88 Carson Pass.
On Saturday, July 14, 2018 State Highways will be impacted as follows:

• SR-89 Monitor Pass will be closed from 5:00 am to 12:00 pm.

• SR-4 Ebbetts Pass will be closed from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm.

• Portions of SR-88 Carson Pass from the Top of Carson Pass to Woodfords and the segment of SR-89 from Woodfords to Markleeville will be subject to lowered speed limit zones and associated longer travel times.

The highway closures and reduced speed limits are approved under permit from the State of California. For the safety of the special event participants, please plan alternate travel routes.

Know why those folks wear helmets and try to ride their bikes so fast?
Because they're embarrassed about their weird spandex clothes and don't want anybody recognizing them.

Hey riders - good for you for pushing yourselves athletically and often raising funds for a good cause, not to mention leaving money in our communities. But it has to be said - can someone in your organization please spread the word that no wildlife eats your abandoned orange peels and it is something that essentially becomes litter on our roadways? Thank you!

What a fool, worried about an orange peel or banana peel. What about all the wild animals who dump in the road? Please get yourself checked into the nearest mental hospital.

Animals and their excrement are a part of the natural order. Human beings with their snacks are not. You might feel similarly if your driveway entrance was littered with desiccated orange peel. Just a kind request; no need for name calling.

Not true. I have several orange trees on my property. I put both kinds of peels (orange and banana) in my garden compost pile and they both break down. What's your address? I want to throw out a few coconut shells for you. Now those do not break down easily. But you can repurpose them, make yourself a bra out of them.

You are a fine example of the anal retentive neighbor no one wants. Get a life!

I'll bet every one of those riders will bring their bike here in a car and paid road taxes to do so. Chances are those riders pay far more in taxes than the unemployed whining couch potatoes hiding in their mother's basement complaining about someone using the roads.

And, yes, many of them are pigs who drop their trash in the road but the vast majority of roadside litter is beer cans and cigarette packages. I doubt either of those are dropped by bicycle riders.

So, I made the request about the orange peels but also agree with you - far more litter are the empties that appear on our roadsides, often weekdays after 3:30pm which tells us all we need to know about who's doing it.
