Traffic Update....Major Injuries When Errant Driver's Pickup Pins Man Against Store Front

Sonora, CA...This collision occurred as Mr. Williams was attempting to park his 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck in the Price Co grocery store parking lot directly in front of the store. Mr. Williams' foot slipped off of the brake pedal and depressed the gas pedal causing the pick up to drive up onto the sidewalk. The pick up collided into a crate of watermelons and a pedestrian (Mr. Sonnenfelt) and the pick up pinned Mr. Sonnenfelt up against the concrete store front. After the collision, several concerned citizens attended to Mr. Sonnenfelt who sustained major injuries and was eventually flown by air ambulance to the Modesto area for treatment of his injuries. Mr. Williams was uninjured.

It first started with AARP attorneys (American Association of Retired Persons.) They fought for driving all the way to death.

The DMV has not stepped up and added computer game like tests for reaction time. This report is furthering the problem (slipped off the brake to the gas.) The gas pedal is not below the brake! It is quite a movement to get over to the right side with the foot.

The DMV put out years ago that relatives have to turn in their elderly. Yeah! that is never going to happen with inheritance to be lost with the kid now being the parent.

Do the increased more complicated testing DMV!!!

Actually it depends on the type of car your driving as the closeness of the brake and gas pedals and/or clutch (probably most younguns
don't know how to drive a clutch, especially females...but they
sure know their ways around a stick

I hear you and I agree. But it's not always so easy to accomplish, especially if adult children are no longer nearby to monitor as is the case with many Foothills seniors. I got down on my knees and prayed my thanks to every god in the universe when my 88-year old mother in law and 84-year old mother voluntarily stopped driving. This is a conversation many families should have but it's also something that many seniors don't give up easily as it pretty much represents acknowledging giving up their independence.

90 !!!! Family should have disabled his car. I did that when my Dad was 84 and I knew he should not be behind the wheel. DMV is a joke !

The victim could also sue the driver’s physician. They have a responsibility to report impairment to the DMV.

Doesn't anyone care about how Dereck Sonnenfelt is doing? All you people talk about is the 90 year old man and a possible lawsuit. Please be concerned about Dereck and hope that he will recover from his major injuries.

What are you saying, can't you see the outrage? It is wrong that elderly can drive until death, ending up killing others before loosing a driving license.

STOP AARP!!!!! MAKE DMV TEST REACTIONS ON A COMPUTER GENERATED PROGRAM IN OFFICE!!!!

Yes, that does work. Factor in that many have not the simplest mechanical knowledge...and inheritance, and that is not going to happen. DMV needs to progress to the times and give a computer generated test for reaction time.

Slipped off the brake, or pushed the brake instead of the gas just does not get it!

With all of the vehicle technology today, you would think that the vehicle would know if you should brake or use the gas pedal and especially of a 90 year old man is the driver.

Have you taken a close look at many of the vehicles of foothills residents? Many are pre-tech.

Ignorant Democraps and Liberals can't drive!!!

Quit blaming the age of the gentleman behind the wheel especially if you don't know him.
Just look how many accidents are below, all different type of age, all different type of accidents, and almost always, it's one dumb ass doing something illegal, like tailgating, eating, using the phone, speeding, passing illegally, DUI, getting a blow job, etc etc...
People not paying attention.
SUE THE DMV!!! for giving them a license for having ADD or ADHD. SUE THE DMV!!! SUE THEIR DOCTOR!!!

I hope the guy pinned against the wall heals quickly. Myself, I don't like crossing in front of behind any vehicle while the engine is running, too many people don't pay attention behind the wheel.
