67 Year Old Groveland Man Loses His Life in Head on Collision on Hwy 108, Winton Man Arrested For Felony DUI

Sonora, CA...On Thursday April 26, 2018 at approximately 11:50 pm, 22 year Winton resident, Edgar Albert Santana, was driving a 2010 Dodge Avenger, traveling westbound on State Route 108, east of Old Wards Ferry over crossing, following behind a 2016 Toyota Prius at approximately 40-50 mph. At this time, a 2002 Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound on State Route 108, east of Old Wards Ferry over crossing. Santana drove over the solid double yellow lines into the eastbound lane to pass the Prius, directly into the path of the Ford F-150. The left front of Santana's vehicle collided head-on with the Ford F-150 in the eastbound lane.

This collision caused Santana's vehicle to rotate in a counterclockwise direction into the westbound lane. The right rear of Santana's vehicle collided with the left front of the Prius. Santana sustained major injuries as a result of the collision and was transported by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Santana's passenger, 26 year old Winton resident, Alejandro Mercado, sustained major injuries as a result of the collision and was transported by air ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

The driver of the Ford F-150, a 67 year old Groveland resident, was transported to Adventist Health Sonora and was pronounced deceased a result of the injuries sustained during the collision. His identity is being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

The driver of the Prius, 26 year old Alfredo Jasso-Palma, and his two passengers, 34 year old Lucia Reyes, and 70 year old Carolina Reyes, all three Empire residents, were transported by ambulance to Adventist Health Sonora to be treated for minor injuries.

At approximately 12:35 am, Edgar Albert Santana was was placed under arrest for Felony DUI and Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Due to this collision, State Route 108 was completely blocked and closed for approximately 3 1/2 hours.

Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased killed by another drunk driver.

PS Make our streets safer open more wine bars for the alcoholics in Murphys and your home town. Profits before children's safety.

Mix DUI and a slooow Toyota Prius bad day. If the Gayass Prius drivers would ever drive the speed limit. There would be less Prius involved crashes. Stop looking at your display and coast every downhill. Like 30 mph down the Utica grade or just pullover.

Don't be an idiot. A person driving 40-50 MPH does not give you any right to cross a double yellow line to pass them, or drive under the influence. I hope you have insurance, you'll need it in your next accident.

The driver was wrong, drunk and passing over a double yellow, all wrong, but it would be really considerate of slow drivers, the ones that go 10 or MPH under the speed to limit to pull over as required by law when they get five or more cars behind them. They are violating the vehicle code that requires them to not impede traffic..... and a big hint... when being passed on the only straight away and legal place to pass, it does not mean speed up now that the road does not have a curve in front you so you can go faster than the car passing you....

1. its murder.
2. if you make the attempt to pass and its not safe its murder.
3. you, not the drivers in front are controlling your car, you pass, you hit, you kill, its murder.

I feel great pain for all involved. When a driver is driving safely and a idiot passes, harm is done. Its not an accident.

The driver should have been executed on the spot.

Close the highway. Get people out of their cars to watch and participate.

Hand out a couple of dozen bats and let the people go to work on the dirt bag.

Then tie the corpse to a light post with a sign explaining his crime.

Leave it their for a month or so. Send his family the medical bills, etc.
