New Jail Funding Was the Hot Topic During the BOS Meeting Today~By Kim Hamilton
San Andreas, CA...The Board of Supervisors had a very long day today, ending at approximately 3:30pm after three Study Sessions. One of the Study Sessions included a proposal from the Sheriff on additional costs for the new jail in the amount of $1.1 million dollars. He is requesting this money from the General Fund. Since the County will be going from a 65 bed bed to a 240 bed facility, staffing alone will be $1.1 million dollars. The County needs to commit to funding the facility, staff, food and medical costs. Total costs for all of these are unknown at this time....
    
Many of the jobs will be filled by clerks rather than Correctional Officers to keep the costs down. Basically,the State of California is counting on the BOS commitment to building this new jail. "It is looking very positive so far and they are very positive about receiving these Grants" according to Merita Callaway.
The Board will have a Resolution Item on either March 4th or March 11th. The Grant Proposals are due to the State of California no later than March 18th. The Formal Presentation to the State will be either April 23 or 24th. Approval of Funding will be May 8th.
There will a Public Meeting regarding the Driveway slopes on March 4th. Time and place have not been determined as of yet. All of those interested in attending should plan on it.
The two Agenda items were zoning changes for properties that were going into The Williamson Act were Approved.
There was also a Study Session to discuss the Watershed Analysis Risk Management Framework Model.
CDA blocked the grant applications that were on the agenda.
The BOS approved moneys for HRC to help put equipment into the new food bank. They also approved money for Mother Lode job training to assist in helping the community to find jobs.
