Modesto Man Arrested in Sonora for Vehicle Theft

Sonora, CA...From the Sonora Police Dept....On 03-18-2018, around 12:30 PM, Sonora Police Officers were called to the area of Highway 49 and Pesce Way for a possible drunk driver. The vehicle was described as a white Dodge pickup truck with paper plates. An Officer responded to the area and observed a vehicle matching the description pass him on S. Washington St. near Church St. The Officer was able to turn around and catch up to the vehicle. The Officer then conducted an enforcement stop and contacted the driver and passenger. The driver was identified as Daniel Lee Chisum, 22 years old of Modesto. The passenger was identified as Maurice Lincoln Matthews, Jr., 37 years old of Tracy.

During a records check of Chisum, he was found to have an outstanding felony arrest warrant. Chisum was subsequently arrested for his outstanding warrant. The Officer then conducted a records check of the vehicle, which was confirmed to be stolen from the Modesto area.

The Officer conducted a search of the interior of the vehicle and located paraphernalia known to be used for ingesting controlled substances. An investigation revealed the paraphernalia belonged to Matthews. After further investigation, Officers determined Matthews was not involved in the vehicle theft. Matthews was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and released from the scene.

In addition to the outstanding arrest warrant, Chisum was charged with vehicle theft and possession of stolen property. Officers determined Chisum was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Chisum was transported and booked into the Tuolumne County Jail where he is being held on $30,000 bail.

So if he is wanted on a felony arrest warrant, doesn't that mean he skipped out on a previous bail? And now his bail is only $30,000?

This seems a "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" situation.

Someone should do a story on whether Sonora and similar towns have grown to like keeping bail money as a source of funds. So they set this guy's bail low enough that his druggie friends can pay it. He skips and Sonora keeps the money. He lives in Modesto, so his next crime will probably be somewhere other than Sonora. Sonora has $30,000 to put toward a new police car or overtime salaries for the police department.

It is the casino that brings the valley crime to Sonora.

The only place around with more security patrolling is the prison.
What a brilliant idea to drive a stolen vehicle to a casino.

Welcome to the Motherlode, where criminals know our local Judges and the DA don't want to house them so they come here to commit crimes, knowing they rarely get even a slap on their wrist. Because of our legal system up here, is the reason our crime rate is rising so fast.
This is the reason I feel sorry for our law enforcement officers, they seem to have to work over and over catching those our system keeps letting go. Nothing like protecting our honest citizens.

Bullet to the head works every time.

We shut down the whorehouse. Now the casinos should be next.

Then a few skulls at the county line and the dirt bags will get the memo.

Ps. It's amazing that with today's tech, you can still steal a car that is not at least 30 years old!

The last few years I have noticed that in Calaveras County there are vehicles everywhere on the roadway without license plates or paper plates. They are not brand new vehicles.
