Out & About Pictures & Video at Irish Day 2018

Murphys, CA...Every year after the parade we take a trek from one end of Main Street to another. We try and take a mental snapshot along with some real ones of the crowd size, local visitor mix, new booths & general look of the crowd and day. With the recent weather we have been having the fact that Main Street was filled was even further proof of the enduring strength of what Murphys and Irish Day has become. The Murphys Business Association and all their volunteers did another great job this year. If you click on an image below it will load a larger image.

Funny, I volunteered or visited from noon till closing and didn't see any truly intoxicated individuals. What I did note were lots of couples, families and friends along with many canine visitors having a good time and enjoying the break in the weather. Many groups had an obvious designated driver. Kudos to the original organizers having a vision for how this small place could reinvent itself and be self-sufficient. (You all do understand that Murphys is not even a town but a place.) From the community park to dog poop stations to charming street signs (and a future dog park), Murphys is a very special place. There's a reason visitors flock here, too, and it's not just about the wine - few places remain in CA that still have a special cachet versus being a collection of strip malls.

It's neither peaceful or quiet on the weekends (downtown), but it is a beautiful place to live, that you are correct on. Many of us who live here would like it if we had our town back for us on the weekend now and then, but I'm afraid that won't ever happen again.
There's an old saying, all good things come to an end.
But I am happy to say, I did not see one person throw (or be obnoxious) up this year, where that has happened numerous times in front of our kids. The Grape Stomp is especially bad with the swearing of drunks and getting sick(probably not eating and I'm sure these folks would be embarrassed if they acted like this at their home) but our family did not stay very long, we just came for the parade, and the kids really enjoyed the time spent. I'm glad you loved our town, but psst: try to keep it a secret, we have more then enough people up every single weekend.

Thank you organizers, volunteers and attendees who helped to make this one of the most successful Irish Days ever. Forget the naysayers, it was a fun party and a family day with no serious issues. Our little community along with many nonprofits and small businesses did exceptionally well in making some money. Through the efforts of the Murphys Business Association and the Murphys Community Club we continue to add to and upgrade all that makes our community the unique and charming place that it is. Murphys is a wonderful example of what can happen when residents work together for the common good!

I did a double take (guess, that was the point) when I ran into the bearded guy with the green tee and bloated, veined belly but that was a rubber attachment to the shirt. Kind of gross but he got a lot of laughs.

Why would you think it is cultural appropriation? Murphys was founded by Irish immigrants - Daniel Murphy Sr. and family - in search of a place where their children could be educated. People think it was all about the gold but that was a happy circumstance. As the Murphys traveled through Canada and the midwest, they encountered much the same (religious) persecution as their home country. Then they heard about a Catholic land owned by Mexico called California. It was truly the luck of the Irish that they already happened to be on this side of the Sierra when gold was discovered, this beating much of the world by months or years till others got here. Murphys is truly an immigrant's story.

How could this be a family affair when you have a wine tasting room at every other business on Main Street? That is a potential for so many drunks to cause so many problems. Please close the wine tasting rooms during this event for the kids sake.

Correct me if I’m wrong, there is a street in downtown Sunnyvale named after the Murphys brothers who loaded up their gold left town and settled in Sunnyvale. Stodders brewing use to be at the corner of Murphys street..
