Exactly. Don't drink and drive or even drive distractedly. Both visitors and locals don't take our roads seriously.

Why would you want to retire up here in the mountain community where life can be hard with snow and fires for the elderly.?The narrow roads with endless turns become a huge challenge too.

Can't speak for all but for many it is affordable, your retirement money will last, there's something very special about actually knowing your neighbors and local shopkeepers and restauranteurs, and the traffic is minimal. Also, recreational and cultural activities minutes from your home. I can ski at Bear Valley in the morning and come home and do a little work in my gardens or ride my horse in the afternoon. I was chatting with visitors to Murphys Irish Day on Saturday and their comment was, "There aren't too many places that look and feel like this in California anymore." On the downside, if you need a mall to be truly happy then this isn't your place.

The country roads keep the Motherlode from turning into the endless strip malls that much of California now looks like. Besides, there's no need to race down the road trying to beat traffic. And really no need to be on your cell phone until you reach your destination. It's a mentality one has to unlearn if you've spent years in the bay area or central valley.

The strip malls and dollar stores follow because the retirees want them and use them (Angles Camp.) Natives were content to make a monthly trip to the valley to keep the big box stores out. Shopping local at the small businesses kept their shelves stocked with the most needed items.
Yes it is our little piece of paradise up here. Stop demanding big business, and then in turn big county government that rubber stamps more needless growth.

Valley Springs had a Napa Auto Parts Store. Then an O’Reilly Auto Parts was county approved. Now an Auto Zone Auto Parts is built and opening directly across the highway from O'Reilly. All three are a less than a block away from each other. Very bad county government to approve this!!!!

That is not the county's business, but the choice of the builder or company. If they want to have 4 starbucks on the same corner, good luck. Government should never be able to prevent a competitive enterprise from opening a store. That's what the liberals would like to do.

Happy to see the charges upgraded. This woman profoundly affected the lives of a respected educator and his family. (Not that who he is should make a difference as much as there should be significant consequences.) Too many drinking and driving under the influence of wine in the region - somehow "wine tasting" is socially acceptable but doing shots of whiskey would make them an alcoholic.
