Calaveras Students Walk Out For Safer Schools Despite Disciplinary Action ~ Tricia Slavik

Angels Camp, CA...Seventy students walked out of Bret Harte Union High School for 17 minutes today to demand a safer school, despite being handed detentions following the walk-out. Although the number seems small, it represents about 15% of the student body. The effort was led by Devyn Pryor, Riley Lowell and Claudia Loomis - all excellent students and not used to serving detention. The students were supported by a handful of parents and many passers-by honking in support. There were a few distractors who chose to use vulgar hand signals to express their opinions.

Now I want all you students to go and get all your video games that have guns and violence in them and throw them away. Also stop watching movies that have violence in them. Tell your little brother and sisters no more TV.

Its kinda like the Hollywood elite. They want all this gun control and banning but who has armed body guards? Who makes a living by starring in violent movies which, by the way, include the very guns they are protesting!!! Something is definitely wrong with this picture!!!

Here’s SOME SCARY FACTS FOR GUN PSYCHOS:

              February 20, 2018 - U.S. Support For Gun Control Tops 2-1, Highest Ever, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds;

              Quinnipiac University

              Additional Trend Information
              Sample and Methodology detail

American voters support stricter gun laws 74.6 - 24.3 percent, the highest level of support ever measured by the independent Quinnipiac University National Poll, with 50 - 44 percent support among gun owners and 62 - 35 percent support from white voters with no college degree and 58 - 38 percent support among white men.

Today's result is up from a negative 47 - 50 percent measure of support in a December 23, 2015, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll.

Support for universal background checks is itself almost universal, 97 - 2 percent, including 97 - 3 percent among gun owners. Support for gun control on other questions is at its highest level since the Quinnipiac University Poll began focusing on this issue in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre:
              67 - 29 percent for a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons;
83 - 14 percent for a mandatory waiting period for all gun purchases. It is too easy to buy a gun in the U.S. today, American voters say 67 - 3 percent. If more people carried guns, the U.S. would be less safe, voters say 59 - 33 percent. Congress needs to do more to reduce gun violence, voters say 75 - 17 percent.
Stricter gun control would do more to reduce gun violence in schools, 40 percent of voters say, while 34 percent say metal detectors would do more and 20 percent say armed teachers are the answer.

"If you think Americans are largely unmoved by the mass shootings, you should think again. Support for stricter gun laws is up 19 points in little more than 2 years," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"In the last two months, some of the biggest surges in support for tightening gun laws comes from demographic groups you may not expect, independent voters, men, and whites with no college degree."

Mass killings by U.S. citizens is a bigger problem than mass killings by people from other countries, American voters say 70 - 20 percent.

YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY, BHHS STUDENTS. DON’T LET THE GUN NUTS SCARE YOU. THEY ONLY WAVE THEIR GUNS AROUND TO SCARE PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE ACTUAL FACTS OR GUTS. A GUN IN THE FACE WILL SHUT A PERSON UP, AND EVERY GUN NUT BULLY OUT THERE IS COUNTING ON THAT SICKENING FACT.

NO MORE SCHOOL MASSACRES. NO MORE DEAD CHILDREN.

Ok a poll and a protest sign won't stop a nut job from getting a gun when there are already 300 mil guns in circulation already. We all want what they are protesting but it is worse than a fantasy it actually makes our society more dangerous because in real life there are not any "safe spaces"

                      Basic civics:

When citizens and those that are registered to vote are displeased, threatened, harmed, and distressed by the policies and actions of their elected officials, they protest as a matter of course.....

                      ....AND THEN THEY VOTE.

Sooooo.....standing on a curb protesting injustice will inevitably lead to more public awareness of an unfair law, which leads to voting, which leads to a change in the law and/or our Constitution.

That’s should scare you.....facts always do, if you’re a conservative.

And what again exactly did they accomplish? What solutions did they present? Protest accomplishes nothing. How about getting an education, getting involved in government and making legislative changes.

Maybe sit in a history class and learn about our Constitution and why we have the 2nd Ammendment.

Protesting does nothing to solve the problem. . .

Their parents should have taught them that.

I applaud the kids and the civic lessons they learned today. Sadly the simple reality is that if the now deceased football coach would have had his CCW weapon to shield his students he and they would probably still be alive and Nickolas Cruz would be dead instead of the tragedy we had.

The sad thing about this is they probably don't even know why they are protesting. They didn't take the time to do a little research to learn the pros and the cons of both sides. They heard it on TV or read it on the internet....kids everywhere are walking out of school and protesting. Hum....sounds like a good idea to me. And away they go like a bunch of sheep!!!

That is EXACTLY what happened according to my daughter who goes to a Calaveras school. At 10:00 a few kids got up and left, the rest of the kids saw they could get out of class for a bit and got up and left too. Total joke.

I stand behind the kids who chose NOT to follow the crowd and "protest."

Protest and social dialogue are often the first steps to initiate change. Consider the civil rights movement in this country or women getting the vote. It didn't happen because students stayed in class or women prayed for change; rather, they took that knowledge and hope to the streets.

They're not being punished for standing up for something they believe or for anything to do with free speech. I would think that should be encouraged but on their own time. They're being punished for breaking a school rule by leaving during class time. I have no problem with punishment for breaking rules which just might help them learn something about being more disciplined and respectful in the choices they make.

17 minutes is not going to make a difference in their academics but does teach a greater lesson in today's world. We should be proud of these students for standing in solidarity. The administration should be ashamed for essentially reinforcing an authoritarian versus authoritative model - meaning do not challenge the status quo or seek dialogue but do as you are told. The kind of thinking that elected our current president.

Sadly it could happen here or anywhere. A protest sign doesn't make them safer. Better mental health screenings, an action plan on potential threats and an active defense that includes concealed weapons will make them safer.

They would never even know the defensive weapons were on campus until they needed to be used (Hopefully Never)

Good for the students. They know they are unprotected sitting ducks and got out to tell their parents and school officials their concerns. They are acting responsibly, in the best Interest of the other students and the community at large. Now, what do school officials do? Punish the students of course for pointing out that a hundred students could be shot dead in just a couple minutes because it's inconvenient for the school administration and parents to deal with it......So the students had to deal with it best they can... Get it people????? Do you really love your kids???? If I was a parent I'd be so far up that superintendent's backside he couldn't breathe. I bet they sent you all a nice little note home saying they got it all under control. I pray to God you'll never find out. If you aren't watching out for your kids.....really, who is? .

I’m good to ask again since nobody seems to want to respond. Does your employer allow you to get up and leave in the middle of the work day to stand on a street corner and “protest” without consequence?

The biggest lesson these kids could learn is that their actions have a consequence.

Instead, they will learn from their idiot parents that it’s everyone’s fault but their own and that they are “entitled” to skip out on their job (school) to be a social justice warrior.

This society has become so soft it’s embarassing.

Way to go! This is EXACTLY how a functioning democracy works! When I sat down this morning and checked out the online news, I wondered if some of you would be brave enough to join the outcry of your fellow high school students in every state in our union. You did!! I’m so proud of all of you!! It’s tough, trying to do what’s right and not be hurt by the voices of people who oppose or are frightened by common sense. Be confident in the knowledge that nearly 75% of ALL registered voters in the United States, of every political leaning, are behind you.

And to the gun nut trolls out there, I say-
YOUR TWISTED SECOND AMENDMENT “RIGHTS” WILL NEVER, EVER BE WORTH THE MURDER OF ONE MORE CHILD.

Boy, you folks really gotta scramble-your whole “good guy with a gun” theory got flushed down the toilet by the sheriffs deputies at Parkland. So, there were several armed law enforcement officers there, and they declined to be heroes, and dead ones, at that. So, a coach with a CCW would be a dead hero and there’d still be dead kids.

WTF is WRONG with you?.......Oh, yeah......you’re just another right wing gun nut with zero military experience and zero combat experience and zero firefight experience......

A functioning democracy works through reasoned discussion followed by a vote. It breaks down when people march in the streets demanding things and threatening people - that's called anarchy, not democracy.

And for the trolls on this thread talking about your kids that said it was "stupid", etc.... I guarantee that yours need a lesson in civics and how freedom of speech works. Why can't both sides agree??? You can't have freedom of speech without some means of defending it. You need those who choose to serve in the Military, serve in law enforcement and armed citizens in rural areas to keep our county safe for liberals.

Look at Venezuela it was a Liberals Paradise until they could no longer even feed their people and now they have suspended all civil rights.

Typical, making assumptions and disparaging remarks about others because they don't agree with your point of view.

Does that make you feel better about yourself?

These students who walked out should receive extra credit for their civics classes and awards for community service.

Who decided to impose detention should ashamed of themselves, and should refresh the American history of non-violent freedom of assembly and protest.

Yeah, armed teachers have been PROVEN ineffective:
Posted on: 2018-03-14 21:59:00   By: Anonymous

The issue with putting armed police or guards in every school isn’t that it’s impractical. It’s that we’re already doing it, and it’s not working. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, around 40 percent of public schools in America have at least one full-time or part-time school resource officer (SRO) — a law enforcement officer deployed to work in one or more schools.

That included Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and every single high school in its district. Most SROs aren’t trained to work with children — in fact, just 12 states have laws that specify the training requirements for law enforcement officers working in schools. Some of those trainings involve preparing for a mass shooting; some don’t. And the number of confrontations between SROs and students has increased in recent years, with cases of young children handcuffed above the elbow by SROs reaching federal courts.

Even metal detectors intended for use in schools haven’t been shown to have a real impact on student safety. A study performed by the Journal of School Health in 2011 found, “Students in schools with metal detectors were just as likely to report victimization as those in schools without metal detectors.”

Yeah, so, CCW and SRO’s DON’T FU**ING WORK, AND HAVE BEEN PROVEN INEFFECTIVE TIME AND TIME AGAIN.

The very best means to end school shootings and mass shootings of any kind would be to massively limit access to guns and the number of guns any American can own, full stop. But the rabid right finds any effort to curb the Second Amendment, by any means, to be anathema. And yet ironically, many conservatives seem all too willing to put the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments at risk instead.

(Perhaps you’ll need a link to understand the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments to our treasured Constitution? Hmmmm....?)

If you wanted to honor the lives lost fine, should have joined the group at lunch at the flag pole. These kids can walk out all they want.
The reality and FACT since Im involved in the legal gun business in Calaveras county is in the last month we have sold more AR15/AK47 variants than ever before.
FACT. At least 40 of them.
People hear ban, and liberal idiots screaming to be punished for crimes they didnt commit and normal Americans head out to buy guns. There is a reason Obama was called the greatest gun salesmen in the history of this country.
Did you know Jerry Browns ammo ban worked really well too?
Yea, in November and December more ammo was mailed in to beat the deadline in two months than the previous 3 YEARS. Yes 3 YEARS.
So hundreds of assault rifle, and hundreds of thousands of rounds came into Calaveras.
Get used to it liberal dolts, the media is lying to you. Our teachers pack guns to school now, guns are more prevalent here than ever before and this lifestyle isn't going away.
My rights dont end where your hippy feelings begin!

Trump laughed at your gun ban crud, he let you all do your thing but then pushed it off his desk.
The 2nd protects all of us, and just for fun did you know there has never been a mass shooting from a NRA member?
Or how about the fact that the NRA has had a boost in memberships in the last month like they have never seen in the history of its life.

The media is pushing you idiots to action, I get it, not smart, no brains all emotion but please just remember.
When all the media hoopla is gone its going to be your kids, your neighbors and your families who are tasked with trying to remove these guns from people. MILLIONS of guns so not only will it be like the war on drugs and basically impossible it will cost many lives, and many livelihoods before we see the folly of the media pushed agenda.

The real numbers of gun violence do not show us a epidemic. No matter what CNN tells you.

Good luck on your pity party as while your doing that, we are stockpiling like never before.

Sure- I can explain your stupid question-

What stops a bad guy with a gun? A good guy with a gun!

The media isn't talking about it, but remember the Texas Church Shooter? Who stopped him? A NRA member walked across the street barefooted and shot him with a similar rifle. But he was delayed-as he heard gun fire, he had to unlock his safe, open it up, load his rife...but he was still legal.

It is funny that the liberal called the shooter's weapon an "Assault" Weapon or "Weapon of War". Yet they called the hero's weapon a "Hunting Rifle"...ooo that sounds better, won't melt the snowflakes.

How many by knives? Still more than guns.

How many by drugs? Let's outlaw drugs, oh wait we already did.

Maybe it is not the gun pulling it's own trigger, or the knife doing the stabbing, or the car hitting the gas pedal.

This is a nice place to come back to but it absolutely kills those who never leave - in their thought processes, in developing compassion for others, even their care if their physical sense and relationships. It breeds angry, resentful people who have babies without commitment, go from minimum wage job to minimum wage job, and never quite understand why they never caught a break.

I think more than anything this forum shows what a divided community Calaveras has become. There's old school and new - and not a lot of listening to each other as much as espousing. Not unlike the recent marijuana debate. I don't hold on to any hope for our future success with these kinds of lines drawn in the sand. Welcome to Trump's America.

Our little small town school was affected by something that could have been avoided if rules for obtaining handguns were stricter.
