Dear California Students, Parents & Faculty ~ Letter to the Editor by Dave & Melissa Wagner

Arnold, CA...Your Governor has advertised to every mass shooter out there that California schools are now a soft target that will offer no armed resistance to a shooter going for a high body count. He has “outlawed” the right of licensed carry and responsible defensive firearm possession on school campuses (Penal Code 626.9-11). That means that even those parents or staff that you might not even know about who are trained, qualified, and licensed to discreetly carry a weapon are no longer able to protect you at school, or even near school. Sorry.

That means that you will be on your own to teach your children, your students (even Kindergarteners), and yourselves how to outrun a bad guy with a gun at school. You (even teachers) will have to learn how to cower like a scared animal in a “safe zone” in the corner of a building and wait for law enforcement to arrive in 6 minutes, or 40 minutes in rural areas. You (even substitutes) will have to figure out how to block doors and windows, and throw chairs and fire extinguishers at the bad guy with the gun if he breaks into your classroom. Sorry.

The Governor encourages you to use your First Amendment right to spout off and demonstrate about how upset you are about violence in schools, while he chisels away the Second Amendment right of qualified, trained, and licensed adults who could have made an effort to protect you and at least slow down and distract, if not stop, the threat at school. Sorry.

How’s that feel for “safe schools” and optimized learning environment?
How’s that for saving lives and minimizing body count?
How’s that for school funding as budgets get channeled toward hardening our schools with anti-shooter measures, trauma first-aid supplies and lawyers instead of teachers, learning resources and supports?

Who reads and heeds “Gun-Free” signs? In fact, who eagerly looks for that sign at a school, a church, a business? Those who have a gun and ill intent and nothing to lose. Those who want a high body count and time to accomplish their evil objective.

California Governor – Is that the kind of “safe school” you want your grandchildren to attend? California Governor, have you surrendered your Second Amendment right that affords protection of your own family members and yourself?

Do the math: a trained good guy with a gun > a bad guy with a gun.

California Children: I am sorry that the adults are failing you….that politicians are putting you in grave danger when you go to the place where you are supposed to feel safe about learning and playing…that the most effective defensive protection has been taken from your schools…that even though I work with you and am trained to protect, I am no longer allowed to…that the world is telling you to shout and march, instead of providing you with staff that have the power and ability to protect you from evil, deadly threats.

California Parents and Teachers: In schools now, your voice to the Governor and “powers that be” is the only remaining defensive weapon against mass shooters. Do the research, then use it to convey what you believe to be the best, most effective measures to counter the mass shooter threat in schools.

Demonstrations and protests are not going to stop mass shooters. “No shooting, please” signs are not going to deter a shooter. Gun control is not going to prevent mass shootings. And the illegal revoking of Second Amendment rights from responsibly-armed citizens, is certainly NOT going to stop a mass shooter!

I express this on behalf of the kids I am responsible for in school and in my family and in my community. But our rights to protection and the safest possible environment in our schools needs to be much larger-scale – to all schools, families, and communities.
Cut, copy, paste, share this as you please. Save our freedoms, save our children

I do not want my children at a school where anyone is armed, including teachers or anyone else who thinks they can be a hero shooting up bad guys. Walter Mitty was a fictional character and he should stay that way.

I think they are not talking about cowboy style carrying of guns in holsters, white hat, star on chest. Concealed means, well....CONCEALED - on a trained and ,qualified person, out of sight, out of reach of others, not in a desk drawer or dangling from a belt!

The thing is - before Brown outlawed CCW on campus; there were multiple teachers, principals and parents carrying regularly on campus. With none of you noticing at all. - We stand behind you in the grocery store; show you property that you are interested in purchasing, clean your teeth at the dentist and perform complicated surgeries on you and your families. - stupidly you don’t realize this.

Let's think about the odds. Suppose you armed 5 or 10 % of CA teachers at all schools. That's 10-20,000 armed teachers (and 10-20,000 loaded guns) in our classrooms. I think the odds of an accident would be pretty high. After all, even trained police have accidental shootings. And here we are talking about people with far less firearms training who are trying to do a different job in close proximity to young children (who won't know gun safety) or teenagers (some of whom are pretty dangerous even without a gun). Every teacher is not going to succeed in keeping their gun concealed from a classroom of teenagers year after year. And you know that if one kid figures out Mr. Smith is packing, then every student will know that and the info will pass down from year to year.

Contrast the odds of an accident with 20,000 guns in schools with the very tiny odds that a shooter actually comes to any particular school. You have to arm 20,000 teachers and expose 100's of thousands of students to guns in their classroom to have a tiny chance that one or two of those armed teachers is in a position to shoot at a bad guy and hopefully not kill a lot of children in the process. Let's also remember that even trained police officers who fire at a bad guy in crowded conditions (such as a NYC sidewalk) often hit and kill innocent people. Let's remember that even trained police officers in the stress of the moment sometimes shoot innocent people. Imagine in a chaotic school shooting scenario that a black teenage student is running down the hallway with his cell phone in hand to call his mom. Bam!

The NRA Teat

"Protests and Demonstrations" may not stop a mass shooter but it might just get our representatives, who are bought and paid for by the NRA (aka The Gun Lobby), to do their jobs and enact laws that prevent the free availability of guns to unstable individuals. Now this is something that could very well deter a mass shooter.

Guns at Schools?

Really? This is the worst idea I have ever heard. I am a veteran I served in the military. I have a great appreciation for America. But it just seems that we are having more and more and more and more brainless ideas. We need to reach deep into souls and find meaning. The lack of Americans meaning is the frustration that many today Carry. Unfortunately, after just a couple hundred years of existence current generations have no grasp of values meaning desires or direction. America has found itself lost and destroying itself. Guns are not the enemy people are the enemy people who seek to add guns to schools are the greatest enemy people who don’t see that people use guns are the enemy people who we sent to Congress to the county board to the Senate after the presidency become the enemy. Americans need to vote for the right candidate who works not only to speak for our interests who work to protect our children protect our families protect our landscapes protect our resources protect our values and do not get lost in fear of losing their right to bear arms. No one will take arms from American Citizens who are abiding. But we do need to work on who gets those weapons for what purposes and for wetlands.

But you live in California where the sheep are strong.
    Emotion trumps facts.
Entitlement, welfare, laziness and the mentality that if "you dont like it you should ban it" is the majority here.

Do yourself a favor and do what most of us are doing who are likeminded, MOVE.
Vote with your dollars and your feet.

We have virtually no violent crime in our county. Look up the yearly statistics before you refute my statement. I’ve looked.
You don’t need a gun. Hell, you could leave your door unlocked for a year, and most likely no one would even notice; let alone come inside.
There’s hundreds of thousands of schools in our country. Why would you be seriously worrying about a school shooter when the odds of it happening are next to none?
Where is all this paranoia coming from? Do any of you gun nuts ever wonder if your fears are being whipped up for other reasons?
    Someone is profiting from it.
This isn’t a liberal or conservative slant question. I’m genuinely wondering: if we have next to no violent crime in our county, why are we so afraid? And who is profiting from that perpetual state of fear?
    Certainly not us.

Compare today to about 10 years ago and tell me you can still leave your door open for a year!! Maybe ten years ago you could. You say no violent crime...IF you are right, we have been lucky so far. But you must admit things are getting worse all the time.

Thank you but the original poster does not want to hear anything but what they want to believe. In confronting the poster I was not trying to frighten anyone. Just make the county residents aware and have information to take action to protect themselves/family from someone who was seeking to deceive.

I have continued to live and work here because I love my natural environment and the people I grew up with, as my ancestors before me had. I have always fought to make it safe, and will stop at nothing else. However there is much we as a community we need to address...Lets do it!

We can, as communities make a difference here. Know your neighbor. Be active in your community

Guns are neither the problem nor the solution. The problem is the students and how they are being raised and managed. If you want to solve the problem you first have recognize it and it's not the guns. We've had those for hundreds of years without them being an issue. Ask yourself "what changed?" between the time when schools were safe and now.

Used to play "mumbley-peg" with a pocket knife in elementary school. No one ever thought of using that knife for anything other than games and sharpening a pencil. To do so would have been the end of that child's world as he knew it, both at school and at home.

That was in the days when children had parents who raised adults in contrast to today when children have "best friends" who raise children instead of adults. Teachers were respected adult mentors and role models instead of "friends". Present day teachers who show up sloppily dressed and asked to be called by their first names neither deserve nor receive respect.

"The Problem" could very well be the content and anonymity that is provided by the Internet. Websites recruit crazies to ISIS as well as the Alt Right. The common link between Nick Cruz and Dylan Roof are hate filled Internet Alt Right Websites. Maybe the real question is, "Why are these young white males so angry?" Is this a matter of parenting and teaching tolerance?

Eventually we will in Northern California will get a voice if everyone comes together. BUT... it takes everyone here coming forward and demanding that voice.

We have 9 elected Northern California Representatives,. Southern California has 111. As it is now they make all decisions for us. But we are nothing like them.

Hey Folks, Gov. Moonbeam knows it all and is the only person in CA qualified to make decisions on public safety. It is our politicians; opinion, not the Constitution that is the supreme law of the land.

Switzerland has the best solution. When boys graduate from high school they are drafted for a year of military training. When discharged, they are given their small rifle and some ammo that they are required to keep in their home for life. People are very safe there. The Swiss are noted for their peace and safety. Their national philosophy is one I call the CCC method. First people confer, next they cooperate and finally they celebrate their success. Our pols could learn a lot from them. Their success is noted by the large number of pleased immigrants. Visit Switzerlands and you will enjoy and learn a lot.

The Swiss by being armed and trained have managed to stay out of the World Wars as well.

The Swiss also have the advantage of being non-diverse; they are all on the same cultural page. Politicians here have found success at the polls through using a divide-and-conquer strategy. The more small groups they can divide us into, the easier it is to pander to us. This is the major force behind pushing for multi-lingualism over having English as the common uniting language.

A variation of the Swiss program works well in Israel too. Unfortunately these facts must be thrown out because they don't fit the gun control narrative.

This article is truly written like two folks who are clueless about public education. That's not surprising the least bit.

Why are the ones who cry loudest for "common sense" gun laws, most likely to be lacking common sense? I doubt their leaders can pass a drug test, much less exhibit mental stability.

Deputies shot

Let's not forget, I have forgotten the year-sorry, a Calaveras County deputy was fired upon with a fully automatic weapon on Pool Station road in the middle of the night. Luckily, one round hit his badge and glanced off, grazing his face. Later the same night, another deputy was wounded, by the same armed man, in the hand. Last, a deputy dog (pun intended) K-9 from out of county was also wounded that night. No Crime? No way!
