Free Range?

Unsecured livestock in the roadways of the county seems to be a large and dangerous problem lately. Whose job is it, and who is not doing their job to protect the public from this? Animal control, county roads, Cal Trans., sheriff, CHP, farm advisor? It is bad enough that not one of the above can not ever manage to pick up a dead animal in the roadways. The animals are just left to become a piece of carpet on the roadway. Each one of these departments just drive over wildlife carcasses everyday.

Cow in roadways

A little over a month ago I was returning from work, after dark. With oncoming headlights I could not see a dark brown calf on LaGrange Road. About 3 miles north of LaGrange, I hit and killed the calf and totaled my car. In the end it was a rancher who was responsible for not maintaining his fencing or allowing a gate to be left open. Unlike something like a wild animal in the roadway, those who own livestock have responsibility for them as personal property. IF YOU HAVE LIVESTOCK BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM. As always, as drivers, we are responsible for following the rules. As I was driving the speed limit and was using my seat belt, I was not injured. Paul

Obviously being responsible for their livestock is not happening for whatever reasons. So what agencies step up and stop it from happening? It is not the rare or random occurrence now.
