Broward County Sheriff Deputy Scot Peterson Retires After Failing To Engage Stoneman Douglas Shooter

Parkland, Fl...Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel relieved Deputy Scot Peterson from duty and Deputy Peterson has retired after video of the shooting incident revealed that although he was armed and on scene when the shooting occurred he failed to engage the shooter but remained outside the building during the shooting. Below is a portion of his press conference and also a pdf of the deputies internal affairs document and retirement paper.

Unfortunately in this incident it appears there was armed law enforcement on scene and because of their failing to engage it failed to shorten the duration or the number of deaths in this school shooting.

We don't know all the facts in this matter. From what I've heard so far, the shooting was over in roughly three minutes. The Deputy was no where near the spot where the gunman began this horrendous deed.

Un-fricken-believable!
I am a first grade teacher, who some are suggesting, should be armed in a classroom of students...yet, here is an example of a man trained and armed who still didn’t engage the shooter! And who the heck can expect me to do so? Being a teacher, not a police officer, was my calling. I am not willing nor able to use firearms. Any teacher who is expected and willing to should be not only paid their annual teaching salary, but also the salary of a police officer!
I am sickened by the thought he could have saved lives, and as a parent you cannot forgive this. He had ONE job!

We are going to have to do everything better. Better at mental health issues. Better at background checks on gun purchases. Much better law enforcement response. Allow those who choose but understand those who don't want to carry at schools. Mostly we need to follow up on every warning of someone who may have a mental break. For their sake and ours.

I totally agree. This man wants his troops to have the right to go into a person's home; take them to a facility for mental evaluation (though he doesn't describe what would prompt such an action). In the wrong hands this type of power would be a threat to every person in the country.

He's got staff that are apparently not property trained (e.g. Petersen) on what actions to take in a shooting situation. Seems he would better direct his efforts to ensuring his deputy staff are better trained to address emergency situations.

Mental Health Issues...in Calif is on the up-rise, I'm sure that goes for the rest of the nation as well.
"Nearly 1 in 6 California adults has a mental health need, and approximately 1 in 20 suffers from a serious mental illness that makes it difficult to carry out major life activities. The rate among children is even higher: 1 in 13 suffers from a mental illness that limits participation in daily activities."
Since we can't lock all of them up in facilities, we better start doing something about the ease of getting weapons of war. Even thought the US gov. is the largest seller of weapons world wide, and don't mind arming citizens of other countries.
Any hoot, here's a link to Mental Health in Ca, and it has a map, by counties of people with mental health issues...beware, it ain't pretty.

One thing we need to do much better is elect our president. Trump is a joke of a president and incapable of uniting the country on anything. His attention is limited to golf and trying to prevent Mueller from discovering all the corruption and collusion in his life, campaign and presidency.

Trump is currently rated WORST by historians who study US presidents. WORST.

More weapons in schools are not the answer. Here Scott Peterson, a trained Sheriff's Officer was armed and had a chance to save lives and he did not act. He froze.
What do you expect a teacher with a gun to do? If the professional Sheriff officer trained for this situation freezes how would a teacher with gun be expected to save the day?
Scott Peterson should have retired a month ago.
The system failed us all and 14 people died. Better training, more vigilence, and restrict gun sales so those that are previously arrested for
violent crimes don't have access to weapons.
The second amendment preserves the right to bear arms, but they were talking about muscats and black powder firearms, not semi automatic AR-15s! Wake up America!

No, they were talking about the equivalent of what an infantryman would carry.

Despite these horrific tragedies, the overall gun crime rate has dropped from the 1990's, even though millions of AR15's have been sold, and over 70 million firearms of all types.

Given the current rate of firearm murders in the United States, it would take millennia to match the number of people killed by their own government in the last century.

If you think that can't happen, look at Iran before the revolution, or Venezuela right now. Remember our own country in 2013? The government actively tried to stop citizens from even viewing national parks, and the IRS was actively targeting conservative.

This shooter did not have an automatic weapon. Stephen paddock has a weapon modification that allowed his gun to be closer to automatic (bump stock).

Trump has moved to ban bump stocks, which is a smart move regardless of your party affiliation.

Pistols are semi automatic, AR platform guns are semi automatic.

The main advantage of a rifle over a pistol is increased accuracy. Still a 19 year old with no training's firearm proficiency should not compare to an officer with multiple decade s of experience.

He froze under pressure, as people do at times. Understandable, but still unacceptable.

        Other than capacity, semi-auto AR rifles are similar to revolvers(cowboy pistols);
One pull of the trigger fires one bullet.

As one person stated, putting gun totting personnel on school campuses does not address the issue we have in this country. It simply adds more guns on the streets an in the system.

The NRA has stated one big issue is that ALL states and their county sheriff/police department personnel do not enter needed information into the NCIS . . . national database of criminal activities and at least one source the DOJ uses for background checks when a person applies for a license to purchase a weapon. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

Another issue. Some states have no restrictions on magazine size. CA has a restriction of 10 rounds. This needs to consistent across states. Reduced magazine size means fewer bullets can be discharged without a reload. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

Guns do not belong on school campuses, in government buildings. We should not need armed guards on school campuses. It is an accident waiting to happen . . . to much chance an innocent would be shot by a guard. And . . . Anyone found carrying (especially if it is concealed) must lose the weapon and have their license revoked if not permanently for a LONG time. We need less guns on the streets. Guns are for personal protection or recreational hunting. ARMED GUARDS ON GRADE, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUSES IS NOT A SOLUTION TO WHAT IS WRONG.

Minimum guns laws in our county due to our Judges and DA
Posted on: 2018-02-23 05:40:37   By: Anonymous

Gun laws in Calif are a joke, well in this county anyway.
We have felons who get arrested here with a gun, another felony. What happens to them? A small bail amount is set, hoping they call a bail-bonds to pay their bail so Calaveras county doesn't have to pay for their incarceration and they, the felon, "promises" to appear.
A big thank you to the policy of our officials, Judges and the DA who want to keep honest citizens safe?
Imagine one day when one of those felons with a gun gets arrested, released with a bail amount of $10,000 and kills a few people later while on his pitiful bail amount. I wonder if the citizens of the county will want the heads of those who showed no responsibility to it's citizens? Sadly, it will happen one day, chit always happens, and usually it hits the fan, and that's a fact.

I agree this is a huge problem. It continues IMO because our news media cover arrests but not everything that happens next. DAs and judges might have more trouble getting elected if the public knew how soft on crime they really were.

There were 2 guys with guns with Gabby Giffords when she and another was shot, they were not able to shoot the shooter, he was tackled.

The answer is no assault rifles, or large clips allowed.

Also the armed cops on campus must be better screened.

My first question is how much was Scot Peterson being paid to be a Resource Officer? I was paid 88.00 a month when I went to Vietnam to join my infantry group! Looking back my life was worth more than $88.00! Not an excuse for him, he should've jumped into the Frey and tried to take this boy out, and yes, if your trained well enough you should be able to engage someone with a rifle if at a reasonable distance with a hand gun!

I think we need Veterans posted up at schools to protect our children! The Vets need the work and are definitely capable of taking out these deranged people! Just my opinion.....I'd rather see the safety of my children put in the hands of a trained Veteran! I guarantee there will be no "frozen in fear" incidents with a Veteran on guard. Takes away the responsibility of arming teachers(which is ridiculous) they don't get paid the salary they should already! They have the future of our USA in classes trying to teach them now to be productive members of society with an education! Keep up the good work educators! Give them all a safe environment to teach and learn!

Why is no one calling out the video game companies, every video game the boy's want to play has something to do with violence or sex! They continue to make millions on the backs of our children who have never handled a gun but get desensitized to all the killing and mayhem on video games! Try to control that, the black market as used by illegal gun dealers then thrives, see it's not that easy to eradicate once a product is out there, pass laws and only the criminals have the videos, the guns, the drugs, etc!

    >They let Scott Peterson out of San Quentin, Thanks Gov. Brown.<

He's still in, with a Death sentence. He tried appeal, but no, he's still in.

Must be some of that Farce book news the rubes believe.

All the previous school/mass shooters were not only on SSCI/SSRI medications but were registered democrats.

      FACT. LOOK IT UP.

We need to ban liberals. They do nothing, complain eat up welfare, and generally smell bad.

It is impossible to ban the AR15 or any semi auto rifle.
To even think it is shows true ignorance.
MILLIONS of them out there now.

Did you know that since the 14th our local gun store has sold over 25 AR15s to your neighbors?
Usually this is the slowest time of the year but all it takes is limp wrist snow flakes screaming "ban" and everyone and their brother show up to the local gunstore asking for AR's and AK's.

There is a reason why Obama is known as the greatest gun salesman in US history.

The Colt AR-15 is a lightweight, 5.56×45mm, magazine-fed, gas-operated semi-automatic rifle. It was designed to be manufactured with the extensive use of aluminum alloys and synthetic materials. It is a semi-automatic version of the United States military M16 rifle. Colt's Manufacturing Company currently uses the AR-15 trademark for its line of semi-automatic AR-15 rifles that are marketed to civilian and law-enforcement customers.

The Colt AR-15 uses 20- or 30-round staggered-column detachable box magazines. Low-capacity 5- or 10-round magazines are also available to comply with legal restrictions, for hunting, for benchrest shooting or where a larger magazine can be inconvenient.

What is a bump stock?
In firearms, bump fire is the act of using the recoil of a semi-automatic firearm to fire shots in rapid succession, which simulates the ability of a fully automatic firearm. They can achieve rates of fire between 400 to 800 rounds per minute. As of 2017 bump fire stocks in the United States sell for about $100 and up.
Bump fire stocks, gunstocks that are specially designed to make bump firing easier, are of varying legality in the United States. Sales are illegal in California, while their regulatory status is unclear in several other states.
Note: Several states classify bump stocks as illegal. Florida is not one of those states. California classified them illegal in 1990.
