Calaveras County Master Gardeners Launch 2008 Open Garden Days
San Andreas, CA...The 2007 Open Garden Days proved to be a winner for Master Gardeners and the public. First opening on the fourth Saturday of February, 2007 the public response was immediately positive and grew as the program became more widely publicized. When the garden closed last November, over 1,000 visitors had been to the garden to gain more information on a variety of gardening topics.....
Master Gardeners now welcome the public back to the garden on the fourth Saturday of every month (February – November). A great schedule of programs is in the works! A few of the topics planned for future fourth Saturday events include: mulching for weed management, hardy succulent gardening, preserving the harvest, tomato tasting, caring for roses, as well as the always popular April and September plant sales. New to the garden are a series of informational signs that give advice on controlling common pests of the garden including insects, weeds and gophers. Visitors can take home handy “Quick Tip” reference cards containing proper control methods for each pest.
The first Open Garden Day will be February 23 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. This month’s featured topic is "Home Orchard Care and Bare Root Planting" beginning at 11:00 a.m. Information will be provided on proper care of fruit trees – pruning, spraying, pest management – as well as how to correctly plant a bare root tree or other plant. The "Quick Tip" for February focuses on the codling moth which is a destructive pest of many fruit trees and walnuts.
Master Gardeners are always available to answer general home gardening questions, diagnose plant problems, and give tours of the garden. Gardening information is offered free of charge. When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is available through the Master Gardeners Help Line by calling 754-2880.
The Demonstration Garden is located at 891 Mountain Ranch Road, and accessed through the Government Center where ample parking is available. The garden is a project of the Calaveras County Master Gardeners whose primary goal is educating the public about home gardening. The garden has been under construction for several years with all funding coming from Master Gardeners, UC Cooperative Extension, grants, and private donations.
