The 2018 Calaveras Sheriff's Race Is Underway

San Andreas, CA...On January 11th a good sized crowd was on hand at the San Andreas Town Hall as Gary Stevens officially launched his campaign for the top law enforcement job in Calaveras County. Gary L. Stevens, long time Calaveras County resident is running as candidate for Sheriff.

Stevens, 53, is a former Calaveras Deputy Sheriff and currently works as a District Attorney Investigator. He and his wife Nicki, and their son live in San Andreas. Stevens has been a peace officer for more than 27 years and cares deeply about Calaveras County, its citizens and our environment. To quote Stevens from his website...“There are many challenges facing the Calaveras Sheriff’s Office and Calaveras County a whole. One of the biggest concerns and overall challenges we are facing is the quality of life that we are losing." Stevens stated,” As your Sheriff, I want to restore and protect it”.

The office of Sheriff is elected to a four-year term, with the next term commencing in January, 2019. The election for the position Stevens seeks to fill, Sheriff of Calaveras County, will be held on June, 5, 2018.

The sheriff is elected to serve the people by enforcing existing law. He (or she) cannot "decide" what the law should be based on personal opinion.

All you accomplish by posting garbage like that is reinforce the image that growers are juvenile, which in your case is obviously true. Grow up, maybe then you can post something to help the cause rather than hurt it.

Where Did All The MM Fee $ Go?
Posted on: 2018-01-21 16:15:27   By: Anonymous

The current sheriff said in the BOS hearing the dept had spent all the 3 million+ set aside for abatement with only 50 abatements enforced. That's $60,000 per enforcement. With an estimated 400 illegal grows, and enforcement a very slow process, taking almost the Summer before a succession of enforcements, announced the question of management of the Sheriff's dept needs to be questioned.

I believe the current sheriff estimated the number of illegal cultivation sites at over a thousand with an "estimated" timeline of three to five years to close them all down. I doubt Mr. Stevens would do any better, or any worse. There actually isn't an articulated plan to remove the illegal grows from the county coming from the Board or the Sheriff. So if you're an illegal cultivator the welcome mat is out. Your chances of being closed down are about 5-10 percent. The chance you'll do a jail sentence....zero.

And that jail sentence for cultivators would be the District Attorneys job. The office where Mr. Stevens has been working as, of all things, an investigator.

Yeah, look at all they grey hair. Do you know why? Because the younger generation is doing meth, drunk, stoned, lazy, uneducated, and just don't care....until they're a victim. If it weren't for the older and more mature our younger generation would be crying and sniveling even more.
Pretty pathetic generation. I feel sorry for their kids these younger women have, useless fathers who can't hold a job, only the mother going to work as the "man" of the house is out looking for work that suits his education, which means (drinking or doing drugs with his other useless friends) minimum pay. When the "man" looks for another woman because his gal is off working all day to support their kid/s he's out doing nothing to help her, and when he leaves her, he will never help with supporting his child that he helped conceived and she'll be raising the child on her own. But her parents will be there, the gray haired people who you see. Why? Because they're wiser then you, the one who thinks a saving account is the change you found in the dryer after she did the laundry. Lord knows you can't do the laundry, that would be beneath you to help with working around the house to help your gal and child. So when she gets your child after work, they come home after her working all day, and now she'll have to cook dinner for the family, because you couldn't, because that's beneath you to cook or help with the family chores, after all, you're the man of the house, right Mr useless?
      Truth hurts, don't it?

There are young people like that in the county, but that is because young people with smarts and ambition leave the county for good colleges and jobs. There is almost no way to stay in Calaveras County and have a well-paying, intellectually engaging job. And there is certainly no way to train for such a job without leaving the county.

I think it has been this way for a long time.

You are both correct. The good ones move on for education and opportunity; others swell the ranks of CalWorks along with their offspring. Black and white thinking, of course, because there are notable exceptions but that is still the overall gist.

A lot of folks around here seemed to have missed that elementary school lesson on plurals and apostrophes. Saw a new sign going up outside the Murphys Diggins mobile home park recently that initially had an apostrophe between the "y" and "s" in Murphys. Guess the grammar police called them on it pretty quickly because it was gone in a matter of days. Still, one had to wonder about the time and expense (and lack of proofreading prior) given it was done in metal.

Not the poster you are replying to, nor do I have grey hair (well, just getting some salt with the pepper), and I am not a Bible beater. Very open-minded, and a personal grower and smoker for right around 30+ years now. I will be frank with you, the commercial grow fiasco ruined it for us personal guys. Thanks for that. Nobody gave a crap about growing a little grass until the commercial growers totally took advantage of the situation. The only people who think what happened was great are the commercial growers and those who profited from them, and the truly dim smokers among us who are too whipped up in being "progressive" to even know what progressive means. I went to school with many of the folks who registered for commercial, and I can assure you they were all partiers (like myself) who don't give a rats a** about medicine or patients getting their meds. Cut the crap. They have been growing for years, and it was not "for the kids". It was/is all about the easy money. Growing great grass is not that hard (well, maybe it is for you) so save the hard-working farmer spiel for the ignorant or your echo chamber of fellow growers. Industry you say? Surely you must realize that "family-sized" grows are not the future of the legal pot industry, any more than micro-brew beer is to the beer industry. And guess what, when a micro-brewery becomes successful, it is bought up by the big players. Hope you enjoyed your free-for-all and made lots of money. All you really did was ruin it for the small guy and the few out there who actually grew to support the medicinal side. Before I go I wanted to comment on a few of the commercial talking points that have driven me the most nuts. No, there were not large grows all over the place (like now) for the last 40 years. Yes, people were able to "hide-in-the-crowd" with their non-compliant/illegal grows. Nobody but a greedy grower thinks it is OK to have a big grow in any kind of residential zoning. Also, can you explain why it was OK for growers to apply for a permit and then immediately start growing before being approved? No other industry enjoys that privilege.
Oh, and knock it off with the grey-hair bashing, it makes you look childish. Realize many of the grey-hairs out there are smokers and you would never know it. Someday you will have grey-hair too, and most likely will want your voice heard then as much as now, no matter if some entitled, ignorant a-hole young punk belittles you or not.

Thank-you, so very well said. Not a smoker, grower or otherwise, have grey hair, have lived and worked here my entire life, you are exactly correct about the growers and how they ruined it for the people who were here for years. Personally I just want them gone, I want my stinch free air back, and the traffic on our dusty road gone....

Very nicely put! I have hippy friends who smoke and they are almost embarrassed to speak out against commercial growing. They say the commercial growers have ruined it for the local little guys. They have their few plants and say that is more than enough. Greed & Money....

Why Change What Isn't Broken?

Rick DiB is an excellent sheriff. He has the support of county staff and more importantly he has the support of the SO staff and the enforcement officers.

He's personable. Responsible. Listens and acts. He's done an excellent job related to illegal mj grows, especially those indoors (the one's most difficult to identify and get a warrant on).

He continues to make changes for the better related to community services (like the parking space for Internet purchases). Little things many don't notice but are all directed at the safety of county residents.

This candidate might do a good job; he might not. We don't know. But we do know what type of administrator Rick is. We know he listens. We know he acts. Why would anyone want to change from something that is working very well to something they know nothing about?

The SO is not currently broken. Let's not take a chance and break it. Vote for Rick.

I don't mean to be derogatory, but from a physical fitness perspective, I put my faith in Rick. Ever stood next to him? He tall, and obviously works out at the gym in the SO on a regular basis.

Like with military recruits, let's put up an obstacle course and set these 2 men to compete each other thru it. Any bets on who would win??? I know where I'd put my $s and it's on the incumbent.

Is the gym the white building on the corner of St. Charles and Main in SA? Every time I go by there I see official sheriffs cars.

There used to be a day when you didn't have to look far to find fit people, young and old! Today, if you don't work a labor job your more than likely out of shape. The exception are those that have time to go to the gym. I can't believe how many times you see a shot of police officers that look like Homer Simpson! Where have the fitness requirements gone? Just like Title 9 PE, a total joke, most of the girls could whip most of the boys because # 1. Girls and boy's don't need to be doing PE together, PE isn't a social club, boy's need to be in the wrestling room learning how to be men, girl's doing what they do, but not together, it turns into grab ass, wouldn't most boy's love that! America, you have allowed the Snowflakes to dumb us down, this old grey hair will go down fighting!

A conservative can push any agenda they want in Calaveras right now. Saying that our county has lost quality of life due to weed growers just to get the seniors mail in vote is pretty slimey. Rick is doing just fine.
