Merita Callaway Announces Return to District 3 Politics

Murphys, CA...Veteran Calaveras County Supervisor, Merita Callaway is announcing her candidacy for District 3 Supervisor. “Being a Supervisor is about listening and working in collaboration on a local, regional and state level… and, as always, in all that I do, I am committed to ensure that multiple voices are heard”. Merita Callaway is a 30-year resident of District 3, multiple term supervisor, and a recognized champion of fiscal conservatism and service to the needs of district residents. “Expenditures need to be balanced between the diverse needs of the community and available resources. Needs can run the gamut from libraries, to animal services, planning department, grand jury, as well as public safety, to name a few.”

Callaway sees land use as a key issue currently confronting the County, “If the General Plan is not completed in 2018, it must be the highest land use priority as it is the economic engine of Calaveras. Zoning codes, including the new land use designations and parcel sizes, must be updated to be consistent with the General Plan, and presented to the property owner or developer in a way that is easily understood”.

A prominent community activist, Callaway’s leadership efforts include the Calaveras Community Foundation Board, Advisory Committee Calaveras Big Trees Association, Murphys Friends – Team Leader, Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway Board, and member of numerous local organizations. Her contributions to these organizations reflect her trusted leadership as an advisor, and as a Supervisor, they are a grassroots channel to community voices she will represent.

“Running for office is not a decision taken lightly. Over the past few months I have had many conversations with former supporters, community leaders, and friends from diverse political viewpoints. It is my hope that by running for office, we can raise the level of discussion in our district and refine our collective commitment to making Calaveras County and District 3 a vibrant place to live, work, learn, and visit.”

Like Hillary, Merita lost a close one and wandered in the woods for few years. Hopefully she's got something new to offer unlike the dried up sore loser PIAPS. Merita took her defeat gracefully unlike the Beast and I respect her for that.

It took 20 years, but Merita Callaway killed Arnold. There are several reason why she was able to do this, but suffice to say that the combination of PD (Planned Development) and a failed General Plan, were the nails in the coffin. Several smart and hardworking people are dedicated to bringing this town back. We do not want to revisit a favorites-playing candidate like her.

Merita was an out spoken supporter of Measure B which allowed commercial cannabis grows in residential neighborhoods. The voters overwhelmingly rejected Measure B. You would have thought, with her time spent on the BS, she would have realized this was one big mistake.
So what now is your position on cannabis grows? You owe an explanation to the voters in your District and the County as a whole.

Give it up Merita, There is a reason that you lost the last election. It is time to retire and be put out to pasture. We need someone younger that has progressive ideas.

No. I think what you mean is she was a loud proponent of Measure D which would have opened commercial cultivation up to an entire new and more decimating level. The ironic thing is that Measure D would have been bad for the entire county, and particularly bad for the growers with whom she consorts.

    Which growers, pot of grapes?
I haven't seen 2017 stats yet, probably because some people are still in ICU waiting for their last rites, but
"Every day, almost 29 people in the United States die in alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes—that's one person every 50 minutes in 2016. Drunk-driving fatalities have fallen by a third in the last three decades; however, drunk-driving crashes claim more than 10,000 lives per year. In 2010, the most recent year for which cost data is available, these deaths and damages contributed to a cost of $44B per year."

YEAH, THOSE POT GROWERS SURE ARE BAD PEOPLE.

This is great news. Merita actually knows how local government works and she really was a fiscal conservative on the BOS. Plus she got things done for her district. Maybe we can get a real bridge in White Pines and at least a replaced culvert so Murphys Drive (near Pinebrook) is not closed for another year.

Oh my gosh she could not get the General Plan off the runway in 22 years on the job. Next she forced through (actually pushed through a zoning change) the medical dispensary in Arnold in an upstairs, usurping ADA rules where it is upstairs. No wheelchair bound person can navigate those stairs. How is it that she did this when other business people cannot repair or upgrade their businesses due to the ill-advised, poorly conceived Planned Development? No thank you.
