(Updated) Copperopolis Mother Sarah Rae Rohde & 19 Month Old Ariana Harris Killed Hwy 4 Vehicle vs Bear Collision

Douglas Flat, CA...On November 23, 2017, at approximately 1800 hours, Sarah Rae Rohde was driving her vehicle westbound on SR-4, west of Holiday Mine Road at 55-60 MPH. At that time a black bear entered the roadway directly into the path of her Subaru and was struck and killed as a result. The force of the impact with the bear caused major intrusion into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The driver and her 19 month old passenger sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. The four year old passenger received minor injuries and was flown to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in this collision.

The sad notification of next of kin have been completed and we have updated this story.

Calaveras County Coroner's Case #17-70 and 17-71.

Fatal Collision with a Bear

This is tragic.
A young mother and an 18 month child killed and a 4 year old
injured.
What a way to start Thanksgiving!
My prayers, condolences and deepest sympathy go to the families involved. I wish there were "do overs" in life. This just is not fair.
My deepest sympathy to the families affected.

This is why that I don't drive after dark unless it is absolutely necessary. You just can't see what is ahead of you at a certain distance and especially a black bear. This is a terrible situation and it could have happened to anyone.

Well said. We all drive in order to live in Calaveras County. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do for most of us. Be careful.

Caution

Please drive slower than usual during dusk and dark hours and always use high beams when you legally can. Many collisions involving animals cannot be avoid, but if there is any chance of minimizing a collision, this might help.

Thoughts and prayers are with this family and friends. Terrible end to a Thanksgiving holiday.
