San Andreas, CA...A functional Emergency Management Exercise was held at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital on January 29th. The purpose of the exercise was to test the hospital’s ability to react to a community disaster; in this case an influx of patients who have flu-like symptoms and may be infectious. Regional Occupational Program (ROP) students portrayed as patients began arriving at the Emergency Department at 5:30 a.m. Objectives of the exercise included following proper protocols for identifying infectious patients, proper isolation of infectious patients, timely implementation of an Incident Command Center and notification to the county’s Public Health Department, access to resources such as staff and supplies, designation of an alternative care site for the influx of patients and timely identification of the disease. The exercise lasted until noon....

“This exercise challenged our ability to provide proper patient care under extremely adverse conditions” said Incident Commander Larry Cornish. “The philosophy of emergency management is to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. This exercise identified many opportunities for improvement that will be addressed in the next weeks to better prepare us for any community disaster”.
Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a not-for-profit, 48-bed general acute care hospital serving all of Calaveras County. Established in 1951 as Mark Twain District Hospital and centrally located in San Andreas, the hospital is partnered with Catholic Healthcare West to further strengthen this rural hospital to meet future community needs.
